UAL and Jumpseats
#554
Not my idea but something to think about. At United we've been trying to educate gate agents that it's the Captain who determines the recipient of the jumpseat. Gate agents are to send all potential jumpseat pilots down to the airplane.
The gate agents were unfortunately brought into this as the arbiter of who rides the jumpseat. We may have taken a couple steps backwards.

I'm just glad I was off this entire week and did not have to argue with one of our CAs if he/she tried to deny the jump. Going back to work tonight and now my biggest concern is finding my gate with the new numbering system @ SFO, which is only slightly less confusing than the new JS priority.

One of the key reasons for that is regardless of what we think about Captains authority management in the end owns the jumpseat. When pilot groups make decisions like the SkyWest pilots just did the repercussions can be huge and cost everyone a valuable tool.
