Skywest or Horizon as a PNW local?

Thanks again everyone for the replies! Unfortunately post Covid information about how fast upgrade times, reserve times, ability to pick up flying has been pretty limited for me to find that’s anything but speculation at this point.
From what I understand both OO and QX are hiring at a rate that reserve times should be short, and the ability to pick up open time should be available if I’d like it!
This is definitely getting me start to ask more question to pilots I know at both companies about how much flying I’ll have the ability to pick up because I 100% agree these are not going to be places I spend a career at and are just a stepping stone for a major.
Would anyone be able to talk about the open time available at Skywest to pick up out of PDX or SEA for an FO / Captain?

There is open time, you can always pick up on your off-days if that is what you want. It does take some time to be able to get into SEA, and even longer to not be on RSV anymore (currently about 2 years seniority).

I’m a commuter from SEA. I’d have better seniority in SEA but I choose to be DEN based because the trips are garbage imo out of SEA. DEN pays better with a better variety of overnights. But if you like the PNW just stay there I guess.

Currently Captains at SkyWest are for the most part, particularly mid seniority and junior, scheduled min days off and unable to drop or trade. I don't see this changing as this has been the case since I upgraded, in every base, with the exception of the year of covid surplus. You will likely not be able to drop, trade or have enough time off to pick up out of base, and your colleagues will be in the same boat, meaning they won't be able to pick up what you desire to drop to avoid a commute to junior bases.
I've tried this at SkyWest for years. It doesn't work very well. Unless you're really senior, when it doesn't matter anyway.
There are a litany of reasons to not work for either company.
Therefore go to work for QX.
Fly turboprops if you can. I loved flying turboprops. You'll likely never again have the chance in your career. I'm guessing the Q is junior, which makes it an even better choice.
Live where you want, work where you live. If you want to live in Salt Lake or San Francisco or Los Angeles, work for SkyWest. You seem to like Portland, QX will not leave Portland. QX will staff Portland.
As far as moving on, QX and OO both send plenty of people on to dream careers at terminal career companies. Study for initial, transitions and upgrades, be prepared for recurrent, if you keep your house in order there, the airline won't matter. If you don't, we'll, hehe, still won't matter.....
Go to work for QX. You'll be happier. Trust me. I'm from the internet.

As things are now, maybe as an FO. Maybe.

Thank you for the thought out reply I’m definitely settled now on QX and the ability to have a nice drive to work instead of a flight! So excited to start the 121 career!

Oh how times have changed…I remember when I applied to Horizon (when dinosaurs roamed the Earth) their minimums were something like 2500-3000 total time and 1500 multi. To get hired you would have to have way more than that. It was a dream to think about flying something like a turbo prop. Glad things have changed, but it sure is the luck of being born at the right time!
Heck even Amflight wanted you to have 300-500 multi...to go fly a single engine Piper Lance...
