Does this mean that the schedule you get at the beginning of the month will change during the month against your wishes? How much notice do you usually get when that happens?

Unrelated question...I notice that days 1 and 4 are significantly shorter than 2 and 3. Is this a normal trip? Is day 1 a late start and day 4 an early on deck to allow the pilots to commute to/from another city on those days?

I assume that if you have to commute the day before/after a trip, the hotel is on you?

Normal for a commute trip.
Yes.
That's correct.

Yeah, it wasn't profitable. All you got to do is to look back at the time when those deals were signed. It went hand in hand with the jets for jobs program ...

As for the 700 renewals, it is my understanding that they were talking about 6-12 months extensions only - to basically dovetail into the 175 delivery schedule. So we are not talking about a multiyear agreement.

As for buyers remorse, I can believe that UA regrets renewing some 700 with Mesa and GoJets but that was well before ours came up.

I think what he means is that when you bid for the next month's schedule, you can see all the reserve lines since they are constructed ahead of time. So if you need, say, Wednesdays off for your basketball league/childcare/whatever, you can bid the lines that give you those days off, and we don't do the floating reserve days/guaranteed days off crap like some other airlines so if you have those days off, they're off unless you choose to pickup or trade. Most lines are usually built with a regular cadence so you won't be stuck with 6-on 2-off 6-on and if you do it'll be for one week and somewhere in the rest of the month you will have a big block of days off, which some people like. And though you typically can count on every reserve line working major holidays, you can try to be strategic by looking for reserve lines that like this month put you in the 1-day bucket on Christmas day so that instead of practically guaranteeing you'll be starting a trip on the 24th and being gone, you'll at least have a good chance of staying home altogether or being home at the end of the day on the holiday.

Non-reserve line bidding is more complicated since PBS builds lines according to a "global solution" and more or less simply tries to prevent having uncovered trips at the end of the run, and could not care less that you bid the weekend of your wedding off in all seven layers. So if you're junior, you can't even depend on getting every midweek off in a month (particularly if a holiday falls mid-week). You can't depend on being able to get 4-on 3-off every week. You definitely won't get weekends off. For this reason, many junior pilots who could hold a line choose to bid reserve if the reserve line fits their outside of work life schedule better.

Either way, outside of irregular operations where you get stuck somewhere due to weather or maintenance, your schedule of days off shouldn't change without you choosing to. They can displace you for training another pilot, or reflow you within the footprint of your trip, but that's a whole other novel.

Moving to ORD 01/07 after sim and looking for a studio/1bedroom place for my wife and I, under $900/month.

We were thinking along the blue line/N Milwaukee between Logan Square and Noble Square.

Just wondering if anyone has any comments good or bad on this area, recommendations on other good areas (without a car) and if anyone has/knows of a place to rent here, even if short term.

Thank you!

I see a lot of people going to Skywest, but I think I'm missing something, because I don't see the huge draw. Could you guys help me out? Correct me if I'm wrong on these, and add anything I'm missing.

Pro:
ORD base that's (somewhat?) junior?
Not the best, nowhere near the worse, upgrade times
No union fees(?)
Potentially longer legs from ORD base(?)

Cons:
Pay. Unless you guys are getting credited considerably more than minimum, I make more Flight Instructing. Paying considerably less than a number of other airlines.
I didn't write down everything I've read, but the general feeling I remember was that everything was pretty average (work rules and so forth).

You will easily be able to get ORD. With airlines that have a union, you don't start paying dues until 2nd year anyway. ORD leg lengths range from going to 84 miles to MKE to flights to Texas, SLC. ORD trips pretty much cover the entire country. With pay, you should consider 2nd year pay and beyond that. We get bonuses too. I'd say we have decent work rules despite not having a union.

Good luck getting downtown for that price. We just found a 3 bedroom place but it was quite the experience trying to get a place for our budget where we wanted to live.

Yeah, work rules is the number one thing. Thank god that we are not being junior-manned on our days off like at Envoy and our schedules aren't as $hitty as theirs. Some of us have a life outside of flying.
