I’d like to add to my post that that same gentleman who regularly denied jumpseaters and has since retired, was a very large man and it’s been said he didn’t want jumpers seeing him sleep the whole flight. He got a dead rat in his v-file and was ostracized from the union. Denying the JS is not taken lightly here at AS so to say it’s a “practice” is absurd and shows very little knowledge of this company and it’s pilots. I guess that’s to be expected from someone who just started wearing a tie a year ago...

Really. Then why is it that every single time I go through SEA on a full flight, a gate agent asks if I’m okay taking 2 JSers? It’s happened to me enough times, that now I just tell them that 2 are okay.

And the story I wrote of jumpseating on own metal, with 1 UA guy ahead who listed, then I was told she’ll have to check with the CA if he’ll take 2 JSers. That was a true story that happened to me. This culture didn’t just happen overnight with gate agents. Something has happened to get them to the point of asking if we are okay with 2 JSers. And I don’t care if you are 6’5” , it’s BS to leave a commuter behind even if it’s a transcon.

So you’re saying the gate agent should just usurp the CA’s authority and put jumpseaters on without asking? They’re asking you because it’s the chain of command and the seat belongs to the CA not because he/she assumes you drive to work and don’t want to be uncomfortable, as you so fancifully pulled out of your ***. I (we) get asked at every station throughout the system....yes....even SFO, by....you guessed it, former VX gate agents. Why on earth would you say such dumb, inflammatory, nonsense that AS pilots systematically refuse jumpseats due to the fact they live in base? You got proof to back that trash up? I used to think you had half a brain but now understand why other VXers called you out on OUR forum.

JesusRelax - your route structure is so expansive that it matters to like 14 commuters.

Well those 14 can rest assured they’re welcome to ride both jump-seats and won’t be denied on the basis of self comfort. Contrary to popular belief, AS has many commuters and we are all, (commuters/non-commuters), happy to extend the reciprocal benefits of using both jump-seats.

Shy guy may be shocked to find out that many of us who live in base now have had previous lives as commuters. We know exactly how important it is to fill those seats. To perpetuate some half cocked theory that we won’t is just plain dumb.

... I would provide diligent counsel to anyone who chose to have one less qualified human asset aboard one of my airplanes. Perhaps their could be some reasons to do so, but I sure can't think of any.

Bingo! Absolutely. Perhaps the biggest reason I get so pee oohed when the “fourth” doesn’t poke their head in to say hello. I’d like to know what human resources are available to my crew in the event of a situation (no matter what kind that might be).

Also, leaving a peer behind for the sake of just a little more personal comfort is an incredibly douchebag move.
