^ also, the typical lines are about 12-13 days of work. Three four-days or four three-days are pretty common. (More three days than four) And many combinations 1/2/3/4 days. Pre-everything - trading stuff around was easy, now it’s sometimes possible and difficult when you can. Reserve is 15 days a month. I live in base so I’m almost always willing to break up a four day with a trade - so I’d imagine it’s not hard to turn broken up 4 days into 4 day trips.

As some have already said, our schedules aren't all that commuter-friendly. Add in an offline commute, and you'd be really setting yourself up for some serious headwinds (read: stress) for your career here.

In late 2015 our class average (of the civilians) was a 737 type, 6000+ total time, minimum 1000 turbine PIC, and most had experience as a check airman, instructor, or manager of some sort.

The majority of the civilians were 121 guys, but we had several corporate as well.

Of course, the type is no longer required.

Our class was 50/50 military, with about half of those having 121 experience.

Early 18, civilian new hires were about 5-6000 hours of total time. Mil peeps had 2000-4000 hours of time, depending on what they flew.

A few friends of mine were in one of the last classes before covid. I don’t work at SW but the “other” Dallas based airline. I spent a bunch of time at the Hilton A bar with the entire crew, all the civilians seemed to be 6k plus, 1500+ TPIC RJ guys with check airman/management/training experience and some on the lower side of tt had grad level education. All that aside the entire group was 100% good people and fun to be around, whatever they are doing over there...it works. A bunch of the “good guys” from my ex-regional work there and all the military folks were awesome and super qualified. SW has a good thing going, I wish they would’ve called me. Lol.

Is it a nightmare to have to catch an Uber to get from say IAH to HOU if your home airport doesn’t have southwest?

On another note, what were competitive times to get hired (pre-COVID)?

Come and go as you please...

AEX to DAL - 1 hour 25 mins average.
AEX to HOU - 1 hour.

Life is too short to spend it unpaid in airline cabins, catching Ubers, getting bumped or paying for commuter hotels or crashpads.

That's OK though... you'll spend money on boats, muscle cars, guns, and won't bat an eye.

I knew a guy that drove 4+ hours to BWI from upper NY. He said that it was the same time as if he drove to BUF or ALB, cleared security, got there in time to pre-board, and then the flight to BWI. The advantage was he didn't have to be concerned about being bumped on the way down and going home he didn't have to wait for the flight home. He would do AMs so he would drive down to BWI the afternoon before, get a hotel room and leave his car at the hotel while he did his trip. If my drive had been 4 hours I would have done the same.
