If you complete three years as a sim instructor and then become a SWA FO, you will start at year 1 in terms of seniority. While performing the duties of sim instructor, seniority only affects vacation requests.

I believe you’d also be eligible for profit sharing as well…

Suppose you’re an instructor and you start class in February. You’ll get profit sharing for that year. Your fellow classmates won’t.

Should be eligible anyway as you’re still a current employee. PS eligibility isn’t tied to which job you hold, just that you’re employed. Would be fully vested sooner as well since they’ve already got longevity.

Default 2 years of right seat for less experienced

Heard rumors that’s SW is putting those less experienced flight simulator instructor candidates on right seat as line pilots for 2 years before they are allowed to instruct?

how true is that?

I interviewed for the flight instructor position last week. There was no mention of less experienced instructors flying the line. Just a 737 type rating followed by instructor upgrade, about three months to complete the entire training process.

doesn’t make any sense. Something about instructing for a few years before getting interview for line pilot. And they make instructors jumpseat to see the line ops. Don’t know specifics.

Not true at all nor does the instructors contract even allow that . They wanted to take current line pilots and use for instructing.

Well, the company just stepped on its you know what by placing instructors on the pilot list. Scope is a big deal.

Default So it’s fake rumor then

Looks like it’s fake rumor that SW is placing instructor candidates on right seat for line flying for 2 years (case by case basis) due to lack of experience on type.

thank you everyone for clarifying

I’ve heard anecdotal stories in the past of FedEx calling applicants before offering an interview and confirming that they would be “interested” in HKG or CGN… seems like this would be a way better strategy if you’re really hurting for instructors. “Not saying we’re offering you an interview, just confirming that you’d be willing to do a three year instructor stretch if you were offered an interview.” Find applicants who want Southwest bad enough to instruct for three years and they build seniority the whole time without violating scope. Seems like a win for everybody.
