Why Southwest SUCKS and Why SWAPA pilots will strike. Cut and paste:
“Why a STRIKE? Let’s chat a moment…
Nobody wants to go on STRIKE. Ever.
Just like nobody wants to have 30,000 days off taken from them involuntarily. (Our Pilots have)
Just like no one wants to have to fight for your life with cancer and have your company turn their back on you and your family. (That happens too)
Just like when you show up to negotiations that you are paying a large expensive team to execute for you and the other team shows up late, unprepared, and unable to effectively engage (not only burning your hard earned dues money, but also burning your profitsharing)
Just like nobody wants to hear “We Luv our Pilots” from a CEO, COO, or VP who can’t be bothered to actually show up for the negotiation and see how their team’s behavior in the room isn’t congruous to their stated goal of achieving a deal.
Just like NOBODY would EVER make a deal with someone they didn’t TRUST without CLEAR, UNAMBIGUOUS contract language that was enforceable.
I don’t believe in the very logo or ethos of our airline anymore. It should be a dollar sign, not a heart. There is no heart, and it’s the greatest fraud that has ever been perpetrated on business culture academics and American branding. Southwest is about control and profits, not culture or customer service. You’ve seen it play out in their actions, time and again.
It was true, long ago. Herb was real, and so were we. I believed in it, and I bet my family on it. I bet my retirement and 23 years of my life on it. It was a second life on the road, missing holidays, family milestones, and the presence a dad or mom owes their kids.
I gave that away for something meaningful, something that fed my love for flying and a pride in the organization I represented when I put the uniform on.
Now, that pride comes only from my wings and my fellow aviators. I see that throughout our industry. Pilots are done with desk bound managers.
They took millions in bonuses. They took half of my profit sharing check after a year of us getting our asses kicked with reroutes and lost days due to them overselling their schedule. They failed the rainy day preparation. The CEO failed to even show to answer to the US Senate. We were in the room when the Senators called him out.
Game on. I will STRIKE to put a contract in place that allows our Pilots a more secure and rewarding career.
I will strike to ensure our families are cared for if we get sidelined after investing everything in this career.
I will strike to see decades of corporate abuse of aviators end.
Nobody wants to Strike. Sometimes that’s all you have left.
I will STRIKE.”
