Default Never Say Never - the times they are changing

It is certainly the end of an era. Personally, I would have just preferred they charged for the second bag, but the bean counters are in charge now. Wall Street likes it but a bunch of our customers flew because of free bags. It is going to be an interesting couple of years.

Yeah we are a legacy airline now. Expect a business class and a widebody announcement at some point too

Except we have nothing better or different. Bags was the last item. Our product sucks! No food, first class dirty planes etc.

A long time ago I remember a Delta captain told me our airline would never charge for bags. That it would be “low rent” behavior.

Boy was he ever wrong. Turns out it’s literally billions in free money.

Welcome to the bag-charging club. You’ll be astounded how quickly passengers shrug and just pay it.

(I’d be more concerned about how this will affect your quick turnaround model. Passengers fight for every inch of overhead bag space, delays boarding and deplaning).

Charging for bags was a big middle finger to the customer and now everyone has to fight for a carry on. Smart people drag a bag to the gate and get this, get it stowed for free.

The unexpected consequence of charging for bags.... longer turn times. People will now shove everything into the overhead bin to avoid paying the baggage fee. Southwest.- welcome to the big leagues, your product advantages are quickly going away!

Next month a lay off on 2000 baggage handlers!

Bags have never been free.. they were baked into the ticket cost. It was just a marketing ploy because they didn’t have anything better to offer. This aligns us with legacies and we will soon announce something to try and compete with them.

I don't think this is going to be the boon the accountants (Elliott) think it is. Everyone is now going to try to avoid paying for a checked bag, which means more bags in the cabin, more gate checking, which leads to longer turn times. This will ultimately drop aircraft utilization and cut into the very revenue they're trying to create. The legacy's don't live or die by turn times and utilization like SWA does, so they didn't experience this downside. It will generate some revenue, but not nearly as much as it did for legacies.

As for us pilots, longer turn times is going to mean less productive trips and longer duty days. Personally, I don't see this as a victory for anyone unless you bought stock yesterday and sell it today.

We’re selling tickets on travel sites. Side by side price comparisons aren’t working because our bag fees are baked into the ticket price. Decoupling will put us in alignment with others.

The only SWA wide bodies will continue to be the grossly overweight pre-boarders sitting in the first few rows. Looks like their locations will soon change with assigned seating and ticket tiers. Finally!
