Ok I see it. Next bullet point is:

  • Pilot hiring will pick up in 2026, with a return to normalized hiring levels. The major airlines are forecast to hire between 5,000-7,000 Pilots next year.
Like has been discussed, there may be more than one new base next year. Time will tell. I’m still expecting an announcement for last month…

I can tell you that the final recommendation was made back in September. I can’t tell you when it will be signed.

Next base is AUS. OAK will be drawn down and closed then SAN will open. Too expensive to open SAN on its own. Either that or OAK closes and SMF becomes a base.
This old trope again?
OAK isn't going anywhere. It's our Bay Area anchor. We serve 4 getting ready to be 5 airports in the region that would also make it a great co-terminal if that ever got dusted off. If SWA moved out of that airport, the vacuum would quickly get filled by another operator who would cannibalize SWA customers.
Love that every Texas based SWA pilot has some weird vendetta against the state that probably earns SWA more money than the next 3 biggest states combined. If anything, SAN opening would draw down LAS and LAX. SWA has slowly and silently drawn down LAX departures anyway because it has gotten so expensive to operate out of that particular airport. JetBlue is temporarily squatting on a couple gates since terminal 5 is being rebuilt and the rest are being utilized just enough to keep competitors out.
California has a lot of onerous rules and regulations and a high tax structure, but the biggest, brightest, and best companies still choose to make it their hub, strangely enough. Many of the country's smartest and richest people live there. Until that changes, Southwest will continue to defend their turf there with a vengeance since many of the citizens of that state view Southwest as their high speed transit system.

hey can you fix your quote? I only said the first half:

“In an effort to get this discussion back on topic I will say that SAN is surging down the homestretch after that email today.”

If you are trying to quote the second half, that was SetMCT.

thanks

Yes you can carry live ordnance out of Miramar, what a silly question.

I’ve never heard someone carry on and on about something like this. The Marine Corps seems well situated with grunts, tracks, and artillery at Pendleton and aviation assets at Miramar and Pendleton.

What are you doing in a Southwest forum on a topic about the next domicile anyway, you get drunk and wander off?

Hahaha, next bender let us know ahead of time so we can join ya….. cheers!

George has not been written off. It’s fully functional airport and now is one of the largest aircraft storage facilities in the world. It also has extensive aircraft MRO, refurb and modification facilities. In short it’s booming!

It’s viability as a MILITARY BASE has obviously been written off.

No one wants to live in the housing because of the Superfund toxic cleanup site.

Also, if the airport side is “booming” as you claim then your obsession with moving Miramar out into the desert is entirely irrelevant because there are tenants with long term leases on the land.

You are avoiding the real question though.

What are you doing in the Southwest section, on a discussion about the next domicile, derailing the topic with a weird fascination about an old air force base?

Day drinking is an acceptable answer….. just let us join in!

Shots everytime sailingfun says the name of the derelict air force base….cheers!

That's not happening in the mid-term, and probably never due to NIMBY. But after the Navy handed it over to the Marines, they invested billions in infrastructure. It was in play maybe during BRAC and actually would have been a great opportunity for San Diego county in many respects. At the very least they should have turned the south side into civilian dual-use, but that ship has also sailed due to housing developments, noise and NIMBY.

Also the Marines like having some QOL for their personnel and dependents when off duty, so while they could in theory move to the desert, they're not necessarily falling all over themselves to do so.

OAK as a crew base could close without closing the station…and I think SJC has become the anchor, surpassing OAK in RON aircraft or close to it.
