This is before we even discuss ATC issues, ordnance storage and loading, carrying ordnance over populated areas and Miramar hemmed in by two interstates.

You didn’t fly over the water? You know, doing stuff with ships and air to air intercepts and Close Air Support on San Clemente or Pendleton?

Never did CAS at San Clemente. As I mentioned did 3 or maybe 4 missions at `Camp Pendleton. It’s not fast mover friendly. There is no reason at all those missions can’t be run from George regardless. George puts you next door to 29 Palms, Chocolate Mountains and close to the China Lake ranges, Yuma TACTS range, R2508 ect… The places we did most of our training.

Well maybe things were different back then but these days they do LOTS of missions out over the water, big exercises with AWACS and intercepts, CAS on San Clemente and a little bit on Pendleton, and stuff with ships.

Have to stay near the beach and the grunts to be relevant.

Also, George AFB is a superfund toxic cleanup site.

Did all that. All those missions can be easily flown out of George. George is 12 minutes flying time to the coast and Pendleton. Can you even carry live air to ground ordinance out of Miramar now? It was prohibited out of El Toro over the populated areas and interstates. Had to do downwind takeoffs into the hills. George would have had none of those restrictions. Let’s not even get into the helo noise tests the Marine Corps flat out cheated on using empty helo’s but reporting them at operational gross weights.
Miramar will be a toxic waste area as well when it’s shut down.

You seem strangely fixated on an old Air Force base that has been written off for decades since it is a Superfund toxic cleanup site. Did you buy cheap land out there to flip or what?

Yes you can carry live ordnance out of Miramar, what a silly question.

I’ve never heard someone carry on and on about something like this. The Marine Corps seems well situated with grunts, tracks, and artillery at Pendleton and aviation assets at Miramar and Pendleton.

What are you doing in a Southwest forum on a topic about the next domicile anyway, you get drunk and wander off?

Hahaha, next bender let us know ahead of time so we can join ya….. cheers!

In an effort to get this discussion back on topic I will say that SAN is surging down the homestretch after that email today.

Next base is AUS. OAK will be drawn down and closed then SAN will open. Too expensive to open SAN on its own. Either that or OAK closes and SMF becomes a base.
