38,000 employees (77% of the total labor force) have officially asked via their respective unions for top management to step down. That doesn't seem to reconcile with the deck party theme.

The good folks at headquarters work for a different company than the operators on the front line. It's more like a dot-com startup over there. Lots of parties, and t-shirt design contests, and volleyball tournaments. They don't see why the operators are unhappy because that is not the lens of experience through which they see the company. I completely understand that.

I know as little about their job as they do about mine. So I can understand why they sit around the gourmet cafeteria and the state of the art operations center and wonder how could those pilots not see how awesome this is? It is a completely different dynamic.

Nobody is throwing parties for pilots. Nobody is designing t-shirts. We don't have a gourmet cafeteria... on the contrary more and more pilots and flight attendants bring their own food to avoid the expense and hassle of finding nutritious options in airports and hotels. Our workplace is not at all state-of-the-art compared with theirs.

It is a tale of two companies.

It's new hire training. Generally guys don't get jaded until they hit the line. Besides, free booze and food is the Siren song for pilots that they can't resist.

If anyone here is a Silicon Valley fan, going to the HQ building is like walking into the Hooli campus.
Flying the line is a lot more like working at Pied Piper.

Spot on Zap. The dichotomy extends to the domiciles as well. Example being the big party being thrown for a certain west coast base coordinator who is leaving for another position. I really like said coordinator but a big party? Really? No parties for us plumbers!

When I was there they were asking for suggestions. Not sure if any got put in place. I know changing a training syllabus isn't easy or quick.
They did mention having pilots stay for mandatory Saturday oral prep and sim study, regardless if you're typed or not. I was there 7 weeks with 5 days off between sim and GS. I cannot imaging not being able to go home for the weekend for 6+ weeks.
