This is why I just buy tickets these days. Airfare is still cheap and being able to show up in shorts and a confirmed seat, well worth it.

That being said, I’m in my 40s now so my thought process of “time, value, and money” has changed for me over the last 20 years.

UAL has a nonstop to Japan from ORD but the family can’t take that so now I have to take Lufthansa to Germany then to Japan. We can agree to disagree but our benefits are subpar and I use them a lot.

I’ll concede on Japan if you can show that spirit is the only carrier without zeds on the legacies, but I believe you’re hoping for legacy zeds and most non-legacy carriers are in the same situation as us. I will suggest you consider a look at air Canada for getting to Japan though.

I know for a fact that Allegiant has zeds on at least United, I believe the only airline that has as crappy as zeds as we do is Frontier. I know that SWA has AA, UAL, and DAL zeds. I wasn’t aware we had Air Canada zeds that’s good to know.

If you’re out of Chicago I know we have a pilot who’s family lives in Japan and get commutes back and forth regularly. If you found out who that was he’s probably the guy to ask. He probably just jumpseats direct though. I believe Air Canada goes over through at least Vancouver.

If it’s the same person he takes United as well jumpseating. I’ll keep Air Canada in mind since I didn’t realize we had zeds with them. It wasn’t a problem when I first got hired but since we lost UAL zeds a few years ago it makes it hard to get there to see our friends.

Do zeds even get on the big 3? They have standby lists in the triple digits and will never put a zed in first. I just jumpseat if I’m alone and buy tickets if I’m with the family. The standby game is a complete waste unless you can fly first Intl. That’s when it starts to pay for itself. We clearly have some of the worst pass travel but at least for now standby lists at Spirit aren’t hundreds long.

I think lack of quality pass travel should be monetized in the next contract personally. Since we don’t have the ability to take our family to Asia or wherever in first class we should have another comparable benefit in its place.

At Allegiant, we can ZED on nearly every airline except Delta. That includes UA/AA/SW/AS/HA and most major foreign flag carriers.

I don't think this is a big deal with Spirit pilots. Most of us buy tickets because they are not costly. Also a lot of us don't like travelling on days off. Maybe someday after retirement, but travelling now seems blah.

I think you’re trying to lump everyone into one category. We (family) went to Europe 3 times last year and Japan once. We use our benefits (however crappy they are) often and it is way cheaper than buying an international ticket. Just because it’s not a big deal for you, doesn’t mean it isn’t for others. This type of thinking reminds me (during discussions on the new contract) of people saying they didn’t care about first year pay being so low or reserves not being able to drop because it didn’t effect them.
