Easy - EWR/LGA co base
Ask a harder question next time

^^^^^^^ THIS. It seems so painfully obvious.. more gates at The MAT, and more than likely new slots due to lawsuit in EWR..between both airports we are destined to scale up significantly. 3 legacies and JetBlue have NYC co base ..They must see some logic in it. It’ll be junior and not super popular .. but I think it’s almost a certainty

Basing pilots in DEN would eliminate scheduling from having to continually deal with commuting issues out of Denver.
New gates are coming.

If you go to the Spirit ALPA site you can plug in 100 miles out from DEN and see where everyone commutes to. It's around 50 total to all our domiciles.

Denver is a distant fourth based on the data on the ALPA site. ATL tops the list, followed closely by IAH (when 200 mile ring is considered, which captures Austin and Waco). PHL is pretty high with obviously the lion's share going to ACY. DEN comes in with roughly half the commuters as ATL and IAH.

Right. DEN has 50 commuters at 50NM ring then that number stays pretty flat to 56 at the 200NM ring. About 80% of those pilots commute to LAS; the rest to DFW/DTW/ORD.

Nothing will help recruiting more than our contract, seniority growth, and a NYC base being the junior domicile

Tranquility 01-11-2022 02:18 PM

Please God, let it be Atlanta….. Would really help out my relative seniority….

If we’re going for divine intervention, I would go for SLC

Given that there’s a redacted email about ‘the new IAH base,’ my money is on IAH.

could you elaborate on this?

Why does Spirit continually set up pilot bases in other airline hubs?

Real question.
I think I know the answer but don’t want to taint the replies.

BeechedJet 01-11-2022 04:44 PM

Yes let’s stop wasting our time with the big cities and get that LBE base going.

Weird question, but I'll give it a shot: because other airlines have hubs in large population centers and those airlines don't have exclusive rights to have crew domiciles there?

doubles 01-11-2022 05:34 PM

Ok, you got me, I worded it poorly.

Just wondering out loud how the business plan is going so far to take on the legacies at their hubs.

I’m not saying go full Allegiant. I’m saying there are other large airports that aren’t anyone’s centers of operation yet that could be chosen to dominate vs going head to head in DFW, ORD, DTW and the like.

Just pontificating. Seems to be an attack the hubs strategy.

Recruiting tool? No relocation necessary for when the new hire pilots leave Spirit for a legacy in that base?

If we only have 5% of the flights in a big metro we can afford to pick off more low fruit. If we go into a small market we pretty much have to own all of it to make it worth while. Large metros have lots of price conscious people that even with a small share we can fill up planes. How many planes can we fill in smaller cities at a good margin is what I’m sure they ask themselves in the network planning meetings.

Meep 01-12-2022 03:57 PM

IAH, ATL, and Ewr/Lga would make the most sense with our route structure.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/bay-count...120103471.html

be on the lookout for this airport getting some “Spirit” in the future.

we love our Florida airports at this airlines...After all we are “Florida’s hometown airline.”

FlyGuy2002 01-25-2022 11:24 AM

SLC . Small move with 3 routes . But great news none the less

Bike Handles 01-25-2022 11:25 AM

It will be interesting to see how quickly we expand out of SLC. Similar to MKE and SDF.

Skyehog 01-25-2022 12:24 PM

Back before 9/11the only place to drink on Sunday in SLC was the airport bars.

San Antonio-we used to do, but I would think we would do very well there.

I would love Anchorage. We could definitely snag customers from Alaska Airlines...seems like Southwest is already beating Alaska up on the west cost/Hawaii and we can go in for some more punches.

Quito- yeah! Why not...jet blue does it out of FLL so can we.

lubbock-ehh probably not big enough but then again some other small cities we serve surprises me.

Salt Lake City- the airport is about to finish expansion. I think we would give a whack at it once it’s complete.

maybe more tropical destinations because that is where everyone is flocking to... Liberia, Costa Rica.... Port of Spain, Cozumel???

I even said it was once the expansion is completed. Which in the company email that’s even what they said...because of the new expansion.

brocklee9000 01-25-2022 02:21 PM

Wow this morning I’m on here saying I’ve always been surprised NK doesn’t serve SLC, by the time I get to work this afternoon I’m hearing you guys just announced SLC routes. Nice.

Who cares about facts, like the new airport opened on September 15, 2020, and your prediction was 5/25/21. The expansion has long since been completed and the next phase of expansion isn't expected to be ready until 2024. Go ahead and pat yourself on the back for getting your WAG correct, but don't act like you understood the background on this route expansion.
