so what are the odds of mitigating the furloughs completely now that the only voluntary option is unpaid...

Very unlikely.

It was also very unlikely that Spirit would agree to any paid option.

They announced the leave program Friday. It's now Tuesday and they haven't opened any bidding for it. I'm eager to try and get a month or two off.

Definitely *should* announce something before the reduction bid closes in order to give us a better idea of what we want to bid.

My guess is that the "volutary furlough" actually is the "leave program." Have they even given any semblance of how long the voluntary furloughs are going to be. 6 months? 1 year? 2 years? indefinitely? If a senior pilot takes a volutary furlough and in 1 year Spirit announces permanant layoffs, can the senior pilot return to duty forcing a junior pilot to be layed off?

Lots of unanswered questions.

The MOU allows the company to do it if they choose to. Nowhere in there does it say they will. September leaves have until July 31st to be awarded. Nothing is going to come out before the displacement award.
