I'm hoping this is a giant troll post, but sadly I think it isn't.
But what it is for sure is the poster child for always living below your means. The writing has been on the wall for a while with Spirit, people should have been working on getting their houses in order for a few years now.

$1,000 a week covers my kids, my girlfriend, her 3 kids, and our 6 dogs. My boys are athletes and eat 3 or 4lbs a meat a week and almost a dozen eggs a day.
I just called our realtor today, I think we are gonna list our home and just downsize our lifestyle so my kids can keep playing club sports. I’ll take the downgrade and just keep applying. Sucks to be going backwards but it is what it is.

it’s absolutely Brutal and it sucks. There really is no other way around that other than knowing you’ll survive. We all joked when we were younger about the “bitter, crusty old Cas”. It’s pretty obvious to me now why they were like that. This is a great job, but a horrible Career. Hang in there, still a lot of Hiring at the Legacies if you can somehow make the move. Yeah first year is painful for a multitude of reasons but livable after that.

Unless your kid is being scouted right now by coaches from D1 school, this is all laughably irresponsible. I have a few friends like this whose kids play lacrosse and they even admit their kids don't have a hope for scholarship or to be recruited but they still burn all the money and time. It's like a cult.

I have never understood this mindset where Johnny playing sports is a higher priority than survival or financial prudence.

In my opinion, your best course of action is to take whatever left seat you can hold. Get interview / application prep and start hitting the job fair circuit.
I’d start cutting all quickly reversible expenses, but avoid selling your home for now. What if the U calls and you could be IAH based in months?
I am sorry you are dealing with this stressor but your goal right now is to maximize optionality.

This is why you should triple down on this one. Whatever your budget for the other 2, cut it immediately and put them to work. All of the proceeds from their job to go to support the dream of the one who has a chance. With that said, go ahead and get a second mortgage if you can. You can't let the dream die. You could also consider getting a 2nd job to support the dream.
