Its the el cheapo comments that this thread attracts and (usually rightly) deleted from view but not from the page count. A sub-forum would probably help this, but who wants to look away from the train wreck?

So many redirects, it may prove time to retire this thread and start anew.

Just read the latest Flying magazine Moustache's column. Is it really true what he wrote about Spirit fumes and that CA died?! How is there not more info on this? Pretty serious thing if fumes are causing serious/fatal/long term illnesses in crews. Did they find what caused it?

I heard the same thing, not sure if there was underlying medical issues or not. I can't believe these fume issues haven't been a bigger issue. Remember SWA grounded their whole fleet for several days because of a Mx issue. Yet we keep flying for pennies on the dollar and sucking up fumes and atmospheric radiation.

I thought this thread was locked. I think the captains death was officially logged as coincidental. However, if you get in touch with our environmental committee, the chairman is the FO on the flight. He can give you endless amounts of information. The cause is usually a seal in the motors that allows oil fumes into the packs system. The APU is the most common offender. Spirit has since put much better and as we are told, much more expensive pack filters in all the aircraft. They denied this was even happening at first. They announced this month that we are also changing oil this month to an oil that has a lower level or doesn't contain the neurotoxin. Again the environmental committee will be more than happy to share all info.

It's not just an airbus issue either.

If you smell wet dog or gym socks get your O2 on immediately. I've smelled it before and it's very noticeable. We were at the gate with the apu running so we just got up and walked off

The only airplane immune to this phenomenon is the 787.

It uses an electric pressurization system, whereas every other jet flying today uses a bleed air system.

So if you smell wet socks while riding in back of Sparky, put your shoes back on.
