I am sorry but WHAT?

Flap extension beyond F9 reduces ground roll required during a takeoff. This is vital in hot and high operations when you are runway distance limited. The engines still burn whatever they would normally burn at ALT TO1 or TO1.

Actually, in places like Salt Lake and Denver you're not going to use increased flap settings too often because it hurts second segment climb.

Should of been more clear. In the SIM they had us try flaps 18 on approach. So I was talking about approaches not takeoffs.

With 16,000' and 12,000' runways you would not be runway limited and yes you are correct you lose significant climb capability with close in obstacles and flaps 18.
