Hey, it's the annual winter MCO base rumor!

We did it at Eastern and it was one of the few domestic operations, other than the Shuttle, that was consistently in the black. I think other spoke flights to the other hubs could justify a 756 base there. We shall see.

EWR-MCO is one of the lowest yielding city pairs United has, all leisure. Eastern wasn't competing with Spirit, Allegiant, JetBlue, etc that are all depressing fares even further.

It may be shortsighted to consider only yield in a city pair. When a regular United customer wants to go to MCO it might be more dollars in the long term to have that flight available, even if it isn't busting in profitability, because it keeps that customer--and many others--in the United network so that next year, when they decide to go to international, they stay with United. MCO may be unique in this consideration because it seems a great number of people have that on their list of must go places. DSM? Maybe not so much.

Precisely, same as HNL and LAS.

I'll take a DSM overnight over MCO every time.

Depends on the time of year. Been there enough in the winter over the last 2 decades that unless my low beer/scotch/whisk(e)y master warning is blaring/immediately actions required won't silence, I don't even wanna go outside.

But yeah, there's PLENTY of small-medium city overnights that to me rival larger ones.

Yes MCO is going to be a pilot base for United.
It will open just after PHX. PHX is going to be 737/320/787/777, about 3000 pilots total. Announcement soon. As soon as it is fully staffed expect MCO to be announced.
:)

I also heard that there will be no short-call reserves in MCO - all Long Call
