I know this is a really really old thread but with the post-COVID domestic focus and shift from international is this any less likely of just being a fantasy at this point?

Yes MCO is going to be a pilot base for United.
It will open just after PHX. PHX is going to be 737/320/787/777, about 3000 pilots total. Announcement soon. As soon as it is fully staffed expect MCO to be announced.
:)

Was this pre-approved by the London van driver? I haven't heard him weight in yet.

In all honestly though, I see MCO making more sense then CLE.

Is Cleveland still a base? I figured once all the pilots died over there they would shut it down. Something to do with the lease that was signed with the city? Not sure why CLE makes any sense at all.

I agree. They have had their time to prepare for that base to close. There are more flights a day on mainline jets from over ten cities without pilot bases. It’s time to shut the door.

Every time I work a turn out of CLE it just feels like an old airport that once’s thrived. Always dead, love the peace and quiet though.

I wouldn’t go down the road of closing bases though, you should be wishing/pushing for more base openings not closures.
