I agree. They have had their time to prepare for that base to close. There are more flights a day on mainline jets from over ten cities without pilot bases. It’s time to shut the door.

Or maybe open bases in those 10 other cities? ;)

But...they have a Shake Shack and Potbelly's.

I wouldn’t go down the road of closing bases though, you should be wishing/pushing for more base openings not closures.

Orlando, Tampa, Miami all make sense to me. Lots of travelers, both business and leisure. So much fun and sun. On the other hand...There's Cleveland.

No one wants to see a base close, but everyone wants the airline to make money and compete.

My big question is this....if we closed CLE, would any other airline feel the need to come in and fill the void? I think we need to go out and compete with Jet Blue who just announced London routes. Both AA and JB continue to grow in and out of Florida. There's money in Florida...Cleveland...Not so much. Florida has a great government climate, reasonable laws and no income tax. That sounds like a winner.

Vegas and some orlando/fll/tpa monstrosity would make sense. Pilots would be getting a free (smallish) house on just the income tax reduction alone in fl when moving from ewr or west coast bases. Plus your home is 100% yours in a bankruptcy vs 33% in some northeast states. No one wants to go bankrupt but it does happen. I am more and more of the opinion that you can live anywhere and be happy.

Yeah if CLE is not profitable then negotiate one base closer for one or two openers, that’s all I’m really saying. Shouldn’t be cheering more forced commutes.

This cracks me up. Creating trips that start and end in a city doesn’t change its “profitability”. It’s a crew base, not an entire hub. There’s not even a CPO there. The cost of running it is almost non existent in the grand scheme.
