You're seriously misrepresenting the facts.

This is the internet where everything is made up and the facts don't matter.

There was a gag order on the good doctor. To get him to shut up, they either paid him enough money to shut up, or they put the fear of Buddha into the guy that if he opened his mouth the city of ORD would press criminal charges.

I am not a lawyer but if I was a legal department I wouldn't want to set the precedent of paying someone off for bad behavior. I am leaning toward a small settlement, and if he opens his mouth they press criminal charges.

But just a guess.

if UA legal were smart, they'd tell the doctor

"doctor. you can have my answer now.
the offer is nothing. not even the fee for the flight rebooking". (mc to senator)

and then file charges. the doc is guilty of state law criminal trespass and federal law failure to follow air carrier crewmember instructions.

but UA legal is not usually very smart

According to the press the doc is a convicted felon.

Without knowing any specifics of the settlement, I suspect he isn't eligible for the first time offender treatment.

Just saying....

This is sort of the attitude that has cost the airline far much more than $11K

Going toe to toe with this Doc would not end well for UAL, regardless of what laws or regs the doc had broken.

OK, United people......I'm guessing you got some sort of internal memo about being extra nice and engaging to your pax?!

I flew on you today and have some pimples as a result of all the sweetness and gratitude displayed.
That said, not sure why a pilot thinks the passengers understand or care about fuel burn when they can barely follow instruction on how to stow luggage and recognize the seat belt sign. While descending then again when deplaning, the show of gratitude for flying the friendly skies was mentioned several times. This for a flight that was under an hour!

Just an observation.....

No, there has been no memo...and I thought maybe there would be. (Glad there wasn't).

I would argue that:

1. A more positive attitude has been on display for a good 9 months or better; largely due to the optimism that OM inspired. Sadly, that momentum has been kicked in the 'nads due to the firestorm of Dr. Strangelove, and criticism that OM didn't go far enough/went too far.

2. I think if you are seeing "Above and Beyond," it is solely due to personal initiative. The fact that you are seeing it in multiple places is because of the widespread optimism I mentioned above. People were really starting to feel good about things here again...and this jeopardized it. I'd guess the vast majority of us would like to show "This isn't how we really are," and they want it to get back on-track.

Personally, when I go to a gate to check-in for a flight, I now stop to shake hands and thank the Gate Agents. "Why?," they ask. "Because you have one of the toughest jobs in the business (dealing with irate/late/lost/confused/foreign-language people all day), and I appreciate what you do." It's produced a smile every time.

Plus: sometimes an act of kindness pays forward. If they're having a lousy day, maybe one little token of appreciation would be enough to calm them when the next rude passenger tries to "sue United Airlines!!" because the door was closed and the pax got to the gate 33 minutes after push-time, and we can avoid another meltdown.

first, it was a ref to corleone. but you don't seem amused. bet you cut it high and tight and always wear your hat

second. the doc needs to spend time in jail. he commited a few criminal acts.

third. coddling this criminal to save the social media storm is gonna cost this company millions in having to deal with copycat idiots

and about that social media storm. 100% of educated professionals i know (and i know a lot) understand that UA got screwed by a whacko. the social media storm is caused by ppl who use social media. think young stupid kids mostly (ouch. here it comes. but seriously. that's who's on social media getting all upset about dr kookoo here )
