Headsets... Hot mic?

Hi Lee,
I'm sure the way you work it is just fine. No worries. This guy was not. I do use an ear plug in the non-telex ear, so I'm not a mumbler, and speak plenty loud enough normally even for the bunkies to hear. Yes, hearing is important, but you still have to function as a crew member. It's more than a CLR issue.

I used to wear a ear plug in the left ear as well when in the right seat and using the ear mold. No comparison to what is a very lightweight and ship powered headset with anr. Especially south of the border.
I have time in too many loud turbojets and a VA rating for both loss and tinnitus. And, always used hearing protection.....
Take a look at the Airman 8. If/when my old 850 breaks I’ll get one in a heartbeat.
But, you keep on using the ship mini tel that has yogurt or some other foreign substance packed into the end of the boom mic.
Gross.

On the Airbus which isn’t a loud aircraft to begin with . Have the telex 850’s , cover an ear etc
Mind blown at the POS’s we use here at this company. I miss tons of stuff from the Captain and have to say huh commonly . Sure I know what he’s asking cause of sequence of events but still terrible. Some guys do mumble and that doesn’t help .
But climbing out at 320 low altitude is pretty loud in any aircraft I would guess

Show me where in writing the captain gets to dictate that another crew memeber can’t protect their hearing...
As for you and i... Seeing as it’s a documented VA disability, I seriously doubt they’ll want to take up that fight but I’ll be happy to go there with you.

Maybe the VA will help buy you a hearing aid if you can't afford one.

Corollary, as was mentioned is the fatigue issue. Back side of an 8 hour flight with ANR I can hit the gym and have energy to spare. Listening to the wind noise and repeatedly asking the Capt to speak up I need a drink and bed.

I choose to use an earmold below 18k and every single guy or gal I fly with has been nice enough to uncup one ear for me. I don't even have to ask and I thank them for that.
Appreciate the publication but not quite sure what it has to do with the Captain running the cockpit that you're both occupying?

“CRM emphasizes how crews communicate and manage resources. TEM emphasizes what crew members manage and communicate about ... Maintaining safe operations is achieved by successfully employing both..."
You aren’t communicating and are degrading safety if the other pilot can’t hear you or you can’t hear the other pilot, hot mic or not, ANR or not.

So, you have a hearing loss, severe enough to warrant disability payments from the government, but it's the captain that ,"mumbles"...
I get it, my neighbor is 90 and refuses to get a hearing aid. He accuses his wife of mumbling and the great grand kids need to "SPEAK UP!"

What a crew; Mumble and Grumble.

I'm still a bit foggy on this. What does the FM and/or the FOM say? Like I said, push comes to shove and you won't uncup your ear, the Captain will have plenty to stand on if he chooses to push in the name of safety. Guess what you are really saying is that every Captain better conform to your standards or else. Is that correct?

I just flew with a Captain... great guy, BTW... for the first time this week. He's one of the shrinking list of 737 Captains that wears the in-ear thing in the airplane. I wear full-up Bose noise cancelling headsets.
Over the course of our 4-day trip, we both made it work. He would use hot mic at times. When he didn't, he spoke up. Depending on which mode he was in, I either spoke to him via hot mic, or talked louder so he could hear me without my mic aiding it. Somehow, we made it work, and had a great time in the process. Actually, most of the Captains I fly with that use an earpiece have made it work.
I'm certain you do too. I am sure you speak loud enough that I can hear you even with my headset on. I believe everyone is arguing for the sake of arguing.
That said, if I fly with you and you find it is not possible to work with me effectively when I wear my headset, let me know, and I'll find a way to make it work. As the Captain, I'll do my best to adjust to what you need. But my guess is you're the kind of person that will meet me halfway, and make it work.

757Driver, in my opinion, you are correct. You're the Captain, and you're in charge. As F/O, I'll make it work.
