Headsets... Hot mic?
#171
Yes, ….and there's the problem. Just flew with a guy that did that. Annoying in the extreme. Every time I tried to talk to him, "Huh?"
I had to tell him to either take it off, and listen up the first time. This was the 777 BTW, not really any noise to speak of anyway.
And for god's sake, if you do use your own head set, put the company one back when you are done, please!!

Wear it now on the 737 and works just as well whether hot mic or one ear slightly uncovered.
FWIW, Telex just redesigned the headset to the Telex Airman 8. Lots of improvements and no increase in price.
As for the ship headset, I’ll unplug it to put my headset jacks in. I don’t want to handle that mini tel any more than that. You can plug it back in on your own. I promise I won’t hide it. You will be putting your ear piece on it anyway so you can plug it in then.

Actually with this headset, it’s extremely easy and is even designed for that situation. Either take an earpiece out, which then has a place to clip it or use the pass through technology which allows you to turn the ANR off on 1 side.... I held off getting headset for a long time, and would never go back to the ear dick. Don’t actually realize how loud the cockpit is until you’ve been wearing the headset and then take them off. Also not as fatigued and don’t have to shout to communicate. I’ve got 34 years left of this career and I hope to not be deaf when I’m done.

“At some point a fed is going to observe this process and give the company a choice: either no NR below 10,000 or buy everyone a NR headset. It's easy to predict which way the company will go.”

Sorry Dave I’ll disagree. Used my Telex 850 on the 777. Yes with one ear slightly uncovered. The only guy saying “huh” was the rest of the crew that couldn’t understand the foreign ATC controller......

I'm sure the way you work it is just fine. No worries. This guy was not. I do use an ear plug in the non-telex ear, so I'm not a mumbler, and speak plenty loud enough normally even for the bunkies to hear. Yes, hearing is important, but you still have to function as a crew member. It's more than a CLR issue.

I have to do that with out a headset... years of well documented hearing loss. You going to tell me to listen up? I wear a headset because I can’t hear, and trying to listen to captain mumbles in the left seat over the ambient noise of the cockpit is impossible. It may be your jet, but it’s my hearing... I’ll be over here with my headset on and the ICS up. Balls in your court.

Show me where in writing the captain gets to dictate that another crew memeber can’t protect their hearing...
As for you and i... Seeing as it’s a documented VA disability, I seriously doubt they’ll want to take up that fight but I’ll be happy to go there with you.
