Hope all in and around IAH stay safe and in as good of spirits as possible during an incredibly difficult and prolonged event. Keeping fingers crossed BEMP that it turns out to be a near miss at your house.

Here we are approaching a decade since Hurricane Ike and we (as a Nation) continue to gamble that Houston doesn't take the long feared dierect hit. Yet we are talking about a city that is vital to the US economy and national security for that matter. Here is a sobering study with some interesting interactive maps that show just how bad it could be:

Even as we speak, the dams around Houston struggle to do what they were never designed for. As bad as it is right now, it has the potential to be much, much worse:

If any Houston United folk find themselves in true need of longer term accommodations and don't mind living elsewhere in the country for that time please send me an email: p e c k j a at a o l dot c o m

Thoughts and prayers for all that are suffering through this. I hope the nation will help make the recovery as quick and painless as possible.

I always thought homeowner insurance rates in Houston were awfully low for living in a hurricane and tornado zone.

That won't be the case going forward.

insurers stopped insuring in texas after the last storm 9 yrs ago. TWIA was founded and you needed 2 policies in most coastal counties. Flood insurace has never been included in home owners and is a separate policy covered by fema flood insurance.

Luckily 1st world countries have the resources to rescue and recover quickly.

If you had to be surrounded by a bunch of people in a disaster, one of my first choices would be a bunch of Texans. They will all help each other out, and move on.

Good luck to them, but I am sure they will pull through just fine, and have a bunch of stories to tell for years.

You've never been through a major hurricane before, have you? It's not a "life experience" I would wish on anyone. They'll be suffering the aftermath of this for years, many will face financial ruin. Families will be uprooted and many have been decimated of everything they own.
