I know you know that, so are you just expressing your surprise that nobody senior wanted a tropical vacation?
‘I’m pretty sure the expectation on the street is you get your first choice of domicile, first choice of aircraft, and are a line-holder before completing training at DTK.

Does it even matter though? In 16ish days a new vacancy will open up and he/she could just bid right out. If I were in my early 20's I'd love to have a Guam adventure.

Being junior sucks and there are a lot of people who will simply complain about getting something they don't want.

But there are reasons going to Guam would be a real hardship. But you're also correct they can bid out before they get there.

Are you sure he had to fill it? Historically they’ve had GUM seats on the drop but if no one took them voluntarily they just roll them over to the next class.

As for the SCUBA, Guam itself often gets overlooked. Because there are so many epic destinations (Yap, Palau, Chuuk, etc.) within a couple hours’ flight, you kind of get numb to the “merely” excellent diving within 20 minutes drive of your own house.

If I was young and single, I would be all about Guam. If I was old, married and had kids and lived on the east coast, I would not be all about Guam.

Common misconception that a family necessarily makes GUM a deal-breaker. Plenty of people quite happily do GUM w/ families- it all depends on how adventurous the family is.

It’s definitely not for everyone but it’s great for some. Having the option is a nice little perk of this airline for those who want to take advantage of it, & as far as I know, no one’s been forced to lock into the base since the old CAL days so it remains that- an option.

not sure they were saying you can’t raise a family in GUM…..simply stating moving an established family is hard moving them to the other side of the world to an island might be life changing….positively or negatively.

with that said……it’s the way it is when you get hired at an airline, you get the garbage no one wants.
