If you don’t think this isn’t anything more than the first shot, you’ve got your head up your six.

1) Always drive to work vs commute if at all possible

2) Keep your first wife if at all possible

3) Nothing is certain in this industry. Don't believe the quick upgrades at United or the oft repeated they have a ton of retirements so you're golden, etc. My sim partner at United in 2008 was a 16 year 75/76 FO and finally took the A320 Upgrade. I was furloughed 5 months after completing training and within 9 months he was bumped from his Capt seat and downgraded back to 75.76 FO. Things can change in a hurry. Instead, look at the history of the company, the culture, their financials and their leadership team.

So, what am I saying....given the information you have provided it is a no brainer. Southwest all the way!

Best wishes.

P.S. -- pass this along as one data point for him as a guy living in domicile. 2017, 6 yr. F/O pay total compensation 285K and I worked less days than the average line holding narrow body United pilot. Caveat -- when I am at work -- we work -- very productive, but tiring trips for the most part. But stats don't lie -- less days at work for more pay.
Southwest...no thank, unless I lived in one of their bases...I have good friends there and at 25 years plus our pay is very similar...they work fewer days but much, much harder...As for wives this isn't 1950; marry one that makes more than you and let her worry about keeping her first husband. Someone getting hired at United today will have much faster career progression than Southwest...

You're both right. This bill is DOA and it won't be the last attack on our jobs. However, you come from an airline family and know it was far from the first shot. It's the nature of the game.

Funny how long it took that little snippet to surface. I agree with your post. 100%. As far as working fewer days, you might want to look at WB FO reserve in a few bases.

I work hard ... really hard.
Afternoon departure to Europe.
A nap or a movie enroute.
Get a nap in a nice hotel.
Dinner and beverage(s).
More lounging then bed.
Nap or movie enroute before the mid-afternoon arrival.
Commutable both ends.
Bid minimum time and drop from there.

I am ashamed to admit that I have lost the American work ethic of live to work and adopted the Euro work to live.

Sure it's prestigious. It means you're employed. Let us not forget the lost decade when we were fighting over sim instructor jobs.

Ha! Maybe. That's if everything in the world goes right.

“Na uh. I work less than you”.

I don't ... And I don't discuss the economic end of it either. Most of my neighbors think I'm a mechanic ... Which I am.
