You made your decision for which airline to be a pilot for based on operating margin as of today? Based on this logic you should quit and go to JetBlue or Spirit. Enjoy your next 15 years in the right seat flying 4 legs a day. You just opened up some nice Auckland or Paris trips or a 5-7 year left seat upgrade for some other future hire. Good luck with your career.

The idea that anyone can foretell the future of this industry is naive. UAL has a lower profit margin but a more diverse reach. We have a lot more international exposure and less domestic exposure. We missed out on a good portion of the domestic feed boom of the past 10 years where domestic flying was twice as profitable as international flying. Our passengers also tend to be wealthier and we derive more of our profit from those that are more insulated from a market downturn. You are correct that UAL has a lower profit margin but there is a lot more behind that one metric. Choosing an airline based on what happened in the past is like picking a stock on what happened last year... prior performance is not indicative of future results.

Enjoy your career and hopefully SWA and UAL will be around when it comes time to retire.
Come on, now. He based his career decision on 2018 operating margin.

PettyCr@p posting history is quite interesting. He has only posted on the UAL forums.......Definitely a Troll. Stupid one at that. Probably not at all what he says he is.

Got some other years where UAL had better operating margins than how about in the last 20 years? How about last 30 years?

Honestly, you guys seem to take it personal that people do a pro/con list. Both companies have warts. And one thing that is important to me is stability and driving to work (Denver). UAL just can’t compete in These regards. So I did the unthinkable to the United worshiping people on this forum, I pointed out that United is by far the weakest major. The facts don’t care about your feelings.

I really hope you guys don’t go bankrupt again and don’t have guys on the streets for close to a decade again. I just couldn’t take the chance. Good luck to you all.

So much hyperbole. “United is by far the weakest major”. How about American’s debt? You almost sound like you want UA to go into bankruptcy and furlough pilots so you can be right. You are butt hurt about something. You probably realized you are a giant tool bag. You followed your brain telling you to take the safe route and go to SW when you really wanted to go to UA. If you had gone to UA you would be that much more marketable to SW but you blew that chance. It is also clear you are very green when it comes to the airline industry. You keep harping on financials but that isn’t such a big deal anymore. Airlines are so much healthier than they were in the past. Delta, in part, is doing better than UA because they outsource much of their WB flying. Probably double the WB pilot seats at UA. I’ll take UA over DL, AA or working like a horse at SW any day. I sincerely hope you are at SW airlines right now so I don’t have to worry about such incompetence landing here some day. Good luck!

I don't think we're all blind to any airlines faults here, but I do think we take umbrage when someone comes on this forum to talk about how "weak" UAL is while tearing us down. And your condescension is palpable. So what would you expect, or are you that ignorant? So go fly for SWA and be happy with your choice, and we'll be happy here with our choice.

And you came to all these conclusions AFTER you went through the process of applying, interviewing, etc. BS.

If you want margins, why aren’t you at Allegiant? One year upgrade, most profitable airline in the country.

Nobody cares. Do what you want. Congrats on being smarter than all of us. I’m just going to go sit and cry in the bunk of my 787 on the way to Sydney then maybe walk on down to Bondi Beach and contemplate my future. After that I’ll head out to Frankfurt and drink some lagers and eat schnitzel and most likely end up feeling pretty dang good about my life at United.
