Living in base is great. Until you get bought by another airline, they close your base, and the next closest base is 2,200nm away. Commute transcon the rest of your life or uproot your whole family across the country and lose your family closeness/network/friends.
I think we can all agree that this job is great but the industry sucks many times and is unpredictable.

Um, my situation. Hired at VX commuted transcon to SFO. Baby coming so we moved to SFO. Wanted to get back to east coast and by chance NY base opened up at the end of 2013. Moved back east and enjoying family life, relatives, friends, etc. AS buys VX and 2 yrs later close the NY base effective Sept 1 this year. So now the combined bases will be ANC, SEA, PDX, SFO, LAX. From EWR, those are all 2,200nm commutes. Or disrupt, uproot family and move.

My story-
Got hired at HP in the very early 90s. Liked the company, but got tired of commuting and our relatively poor QOL. Jumped to DL in 2000 just in time for a 4 1/2 year furlough while my buddies who stayed at HP became US then AA pilots without lifting a finger. The guy 1 number junior to me at HP is now top 20% at AA. I just broke 60% at DL.
You never know.

Liqudated:
Braniff
Braniff II
Pan Am
Eastern
Midway
Midway II
Via mergers/buyouts:
Western
TWA
Piedmont
PSA
Hughes Airwest
I am sure many others that aren't at my finger tips.
Dozens, if not over 100, who just weren't big enough to count as a major.
Nothing is a "sure,secure thing"
Not even UAL or SWA.
