My main question at this point is that we've seen a few cancelations recently (mostly cited to crew availability)... Is that a common occurrence? Any projections/insights on the number of flights on UAL metal per day? Seasonal variability? Right now I'm mostly seeing 3-4 flights per day, with 1 or 2 of them mainline. TIA
Consider the west side of the sierras so you can reasonably drive.
United canceled the last flight (mainline) into RNO the last two days in a row. The SKW flights in the morning are the first to get canceled when some fog rolls into SFO, it’s a mess.

If you are considering RNO because you love the area, fair enough. But, if you are simply thinking about saving on taxes there are better options. Lots of PDX commuters live across the border in WA, a much easier flying commute than RNO. LAS is also a much easier commute. RNO to LAX is actually an easier flying commute than SFO (eight flights tomorrow vs. three to SFO), and the 737 base in LAX is now actually a bit bigger than SFO. Despite the money you'd save living in RNO, you can always make a lot more of it living closer to base with the ability to pick up trips on short notice. As my Dad told me a long time ago, "You can always earn more money, but you can't buy more time. Spend your time wisely."

Crew availability seems plausible but I’ve been pulled off two flights recently because of “temperature” (pretty sure that meant density altitude issues but who knows). Southwest to OAK and SJC are much more reliable but they cut back to one a day since COVID. And Uber to SFO is getting pricey. It is nice to always have the backup of driving but be prepared to use it. A lot. That or the magic words “California Sick”.
I’m a commuter based in LA. Can you elaborate on this California sick thing? I can’t find any information about it but I’d like to know what resources I have available to me.

If you’re on the Bus or 737, those 8 LAX flights don’t do you much good if you have a trip out of SNA, ONT, or BUR.

Reno gets an average of 20 inches of snow in an entire winter. Chicago averages 35, Denver airport averages 60.
