Reserve idea
#41
Back in the 1990's, United pilots on reserve had a guarantee of 78 hours. The lines were built to around 81 hours.
Everyone got paid (basically) the same.
The pay was capped at 85 hours per month. Anything over 85 went in to the "bank". You would spend the whole year never making more than 85 hours. At the end of the year, they would either pay out the bank, or start dropping trips from your schedule to eat it up.
The idea was that we should have a high enough pay rate that we wouldn't have to ***** ourselves out to work every single day.
I can see the merit of that old system. Some months I just can't pass up the money, but if we would just look at this job more as a "salaried" position, we would all spend a lot more time at home.
I don't see us going back, but it would be nice to bring the reserve guarantee up to 78 hours again.
