I have a M&G coming up next month, and was wondering what some of the answers were for the “Why United” question.

Kinda personal, why are you applying should guide you. Culture, bases, fleet, routes , upgrade times?

I’d love to hear some of the answers given to these types of questions. If honesty and transparency were in play, most people would say 1) your bases fit my situation 2) you called before delta or American. I wonder how much smoke is required to be blown up the CP’s ass in order to get a recommendation for an interview? Anyway, play the game and sound like United is the end all/be all, and you’ll do fine. Good luck.

For the why United, the WORST thing you can do is look at how anyone else answered the question. The whole point of the question is to see how you can be creative and real. If you say anything about bases, airplanes, pay, travel, etc then that will get you shown the door. You need to be authentic. They know that the pay is awesome, the planes are awesome, and you get to travel for free. United is huge on core4. If you don’t know what that is l, then I suggest looking it up. If you can tell a story as to why you want to work for United that is heartfelt, deep and personal then that is a good place to start. United does a lot more than fly planes from point A to point B. (i.e the North Pole flights) They are involved in the community and do a lot of charity work. I suggest looking that up. Again, it is less about how much you know about it but how it has moved you to really being passionate for wanting to work at United. You see how answers about bases, airplanes, and pay may bend them out of shape? This is just my two cents.

If they were being authentic, that is precisely what 95% of the applicants WOULD say. Few give a rat’s rear about corporate wokeness. So what you are really saying is that you want people who can lie convincingly and fake sincerity.

Got it. ;)

Sad but true. The informal surveys of the new peeps I fly with indicate exactly this. The volunteering at the leper colony stops the day they get hired. Like I said, play the game, but let’s not pretend that being authentic doesn’t equate to discussing pay, benefits, bases etc.

I don’t know, I think you can be authentic and care about things like pay and bases. Do you jump seat on United a lot? Like our culture? Maybe you have a relative or friend that works here. If it’s about bases for you, then turn it into something positive such as how your home united base makes you feel when you see the big 777 taxi past. If it’s about pay, then talk about how excited you are to be a WB pilot or excited to take that 1 year upgrade and be a United Capt. it should be personal and positive.. doesn’t mean you have to be BS’ing

I agree, since I believe being authentic is primarily about bases, pay, benefits. The other stuff is nice, but not been what I’ve seen as the primary driver for coming here. As for my connection to United, would a 27 year senior Captain here be enough to form an educated opinion? I don’t think I’m revealing any secrets here. Like I said, play the game, but most people want to make a nice living, not commute to work, have a solid retirement. To be full of pride as a 777 taxis by in your home town is nice, but not why most of us get in this business. Again, my opinion only, and worth exactly what you paid for it!

ok I was trying to give useful advise that might actually get someone through an interview, not you, I know you work here.
