How horrific of a corner must one paint themselves in with forcing the family to 5 hours in an airport overnight? Snow storms happen, line of thunderstorms happen, MX delays happen and they all ruin travel for those with paid tickets just as much as standby. I get that and totally sympathize as I’ve been on the receiving end many times. Fortunately never with children. However if you find your getting stuck in airports at the middle of the night because you’re losing big at the non rev game, then maybe time to rethink the way the family travels.
And for the suggestion about lounges, not gonna happen. Most domestic lounges seem close around 11pm and open at 5am.

Wow! All the small minded, no imagination DBs are being drawn to this thread like a moths to a flame. Flying for free is a great perk with this job. The guy asked a simple polite question and you guys cant help yourselves with all the moralizing.

Love the opinions on this thread. Yes, the plan didnt work. Yes. We slept with the general public. No, it wasn't about spending on a hotel. It was more about having quality rest for some weary kids with a limited 5 hour block. I come from humble roots so it was NBD. It was an honest question for a west coast airport that was empty and not a soul in sight. I was more curious for when the instance where the best laid plan goes TU, what is within reason. Would the kids have appreciated it? Sure. Would I have liked to shown them what an awesome company I work for and the well kept facilities we as professionals work in? I think my 7 year old kid would've thought it was cool because it wasn't LGA. But as a professional here, and in many previous lives, I opted not too in lieu of having a long term cultural understanding and the experience at this company. Thanks for the input and constructive criticism.

Recently, we were at a friends house for dinner. My friend recieved a call from his son. The conversation was about being stuck at an airport overnight with the wife and kids. His son was one of a few pilots I’ve mentored from putting the key into the ignition of a C-152 through his current position with a legacy.
It was a holiday weekend, flights booked full and about 600 miles from home. He was planning on a few days at home before returning to work. My friend handed me the phone. I told his son to go to a hotel, get a good night sleep... rent a car (one-way)... problem solved, home the next evening.
Should have done a better job of mentoring when it comes to traveling with family in tow. Never, and I mean never non rev with the family in tow. Unfair to the kids and spouse. Family vacations are planned well in advance. Tickets can be purchased at reasonable rates.
