FPA/rest area
Might be a dumb question, but if you're flying the fam standby and get stuck overnight at an airport. Is it bad practice to bring them into the pilot rest areas as long as no one is around?

Crew rest areas are negotiated and have an expectation of privacy and security. Someone is bound to walk in at any time. It’s just not polite, a liability, against any company’s policy, maybe even a violation depending on airport zoning. You assume the risk of securing lodging when traveling with dependents. A rest facility is a space for employees, not a shelter. Imagine if everyone started doing that? It would go downhill real fast.

I figured and all good points. It was unique instance where I had 5 hours between last red eye and the first a.m. trip. Kids were tired and could have used a quiet place for a nap from the previous long flight. Considering the blaring security warnings all night long over the loud speaker, it would have been a nice break for them.

I would look at airport lounges. buying access is pretty affordable.
Also, if retired military look for a USO lounge.
There are a few "clubs" that allow you to buy a membership to various affiliated airline/airline alliance clubs at major airports.
Look at deals on various credit cards for good deals on lounge access.
+ I see lots of signs around our various pilot lounges warning that it is a SIDA area/Sterile area. Badging required. I wouldn't risk a fine, or an ass chewing by management.

It’s a legitimate question. 5 hours is hardly enough time to go in and out of security and check into a hotel with kids. Sometimes you just get in a bind, especially non rev. After 9/11 going through a ciphered door with non employees became a bit problematic if not prohibited. Sometimes all you can do is find an abandoned gate area and crash.

No it's not. It's a question from the "me" generation. With all respect to the original poster, I'm surprised this was even asked. The general lack of courtesy today amazes me. Pony up and get a hotel room. It was your choice to travel standby.

How dare they fly standby with their family. They should’ve just bought a discount ticket and something like this never could’ve happened to them...I think we should just get rid of nonrevving and jumpseating all together.
