If the standard for actually getting hired is the same how does this affect quality?

Not worried in the least. It's just history repeating.

In the late 1960's UAL hired a wave of pilots that only had private licenses and UAL actually ran a flight school to get commercial/multi ratings. Those guys retired as 747 CAs.

Between 1988 and 1995, UAL hired a wave of interns when UAL's minimums were 350TT. (Although UAL's published minimums didn't change, UAL smartly looked for more experience starting in '95.) We have plenty of CAs flying the system daily that were hired with less than 1000TT and zero turbine.

IMHO, this AVIATE program is much better structured than either of those earlier schemes.

I'd much rather have low time (3000TT), but very well trained, new-hires flying with experienced CAs at mainline than the situation at Express with marginally trained 1500hr single-engine FOs flying with CAs that were hired six months earlier.

It's all about the crew pairing. Train them right, mentor the culture, and the sharp young pilots will soak it up like a sponge.

Whats this do to express now? Green on green will only get worse at express. Bring that flying in house.

Totally agree. If it were up to me there would not be Express.

If a 1500 hr pilot can handle an E175 they can handle a 737 or A320 and I'd rather have them paired with a mainline CA. Either at Express or mainline there's 1500hr pilots flying airplanes with UAL paint.

I like this program. Let’s get top talent at United. I think it’s insane that American has a flow through. That means the much lower standards for pilot hiring at their WO’s eventually make it to American. I would fight against a flow at United with everything I have.

But that is typical for American, being last place among the legacies and not caring.

Yup, keep all the sub grade pilots at United’s regionals so only they land planes in the snow with United’s pax on board.

Meanwhile two United Express carriers with reputable training programs and good safety records were not even included in this new program.

Pure speculation on my part:

Absent this program it's not hard to visualize mainline hiring 1500hr pilots leaving the well dry for express.

The AVIATE "partners" are the ones with the greatest need for FOs. This program is just as much about staffing UAX as it is a career pathway program. Perhaps more.

Well mainline skygod and god’s gift to aviation.

You may think you are a genius but the regional pilots are flying the exact same passengers you are. Yet they are unworthy.

Obviously your college didn’t offer logic.

I’m so glad we only hire the best at mainline.

At Northwest we hired a pilot that worked his way into MEC treasurer. Then proceeded to embezzle the flower fund we used when a pilot had a death in the family and buy a Mercedes with it.

I could go on and on and on.

Wood chipper??

Fake suicide?

there but for the grace of God go I

United DOES NOT care about training or safety! It’s entertaining to see some United pilots brag about this new program to keep the bad pilots away. Hey fools, United rewards more flying to the cheaper regionals that have lower training standards. It’s all about $$$, not safety.

Your posts sound terribly bitter. I’m a fan of this new program. Mainline pilots will be involved in the interview process at the Express carriers participating in the CPP as well as at the collegiate level.
