No it won’t, it’ll be thrown on the scrap heap of the thousands of other pilots it’s happened to. Dookie happens in this industry, and it’s in no way unprecedented. If anything they did them a favor and they can hopefully rescind their resignations or make other plans. The hiring market is still robust. Would be far worse to get furloughed in 9 months on probation with lots of other pilots into the potential glut of pilots looking for jobs... assuming worse case scenario.

That’s a little dramatic. It’s not like someone can just decide to go work for Delta instead. You apply everywhere and pray that one actually calls. Any of the big three could literally kick new hires in the junk and people would be lined up around the corner for the same opportunity. With what United pays, they will have applicants beating down their door and this won’t even be a faint memory.

Anyone know what the 23 are being told by the VP of ops?

It would be worse to get furloughed in 9 months vs. jobless now? I'd guess most if not all of these pilots would rather be furloughed from United and on the seniority list instead.

They should have allowed them to start class at the very least, be given a seniority number, and then see what happens. Or give them an option to start now with an uncertain 6 months and possible immediate furlough, or bypass the class. There are many ways this could have been done better. But rescind a class date 3 days prior? That's asinine.

You can bet this will be overblown by "the news" as far as they can take it.

No matter our political preferences, we should rightly be offended by your inane post, bringing unfounded conspiracy theory politics into this subject.

New hires have been told not to come to class, and are possibly unable to return to their previous jobs.

China has taken this seriously, but too late: have you seen the videos leaked out? a forced quarantine of 50M, hospitals at over capacity, they shut down their factories in the region. They require citizens in public to wear masks in spite of the shortage of them. They force citizens showing symptoms in public (presumably those who couldn’t get admitted to hospitals) to quarantine centers. They cremate verified victims from hospitals and those found on the street and in their homes. Supposedly, the dead found on the street and in their homes aren’t included in the official death tolls.

Their overcrowding might have contributed to the spread but it absolutely doesn’t mean we couldn’t have an epidemic here.

There is no way the media is co-opting this to go after the President. I hope that the COVID-19 doesn’t make a big impact in the USA, but based on what has occurred in China so far, we need to be concerned, and repeating conspiracy theories is not the way to respond.

Care to elaborate on how he hates pilots as a result of this?

This wouldn't rise to the VP of ops level. No need for him to "tell anyone anything." He doesn't call me when I am 10 minutes late due to weather delay or gate hold. It may stink if the 23 folks who are ready for the next phase in their career, but right now there's nothing to tell them. We got max airplanes parked. They knew that. And we got reduction in flying due to a breach in the Chinese biological weapons lab in Wuhan which has caused coronavirus.

what I did when I was in this situation once in 1994 was go out and buy a puppy. They can all find temporary work unlike me as flying jobs were hard to get, but if they are qualified to come to UAL, then they are qualified to do something else til they get the call.

I have already started a GoFundMe account for these pilots. The intent is for a few months of extra cash for the pilots that are high and dry with no employment and money to back to their previous employer. I have reached out to their group to see who may be in need and would be willing to accept funds before I go public with the account. I dont want to create a huge fund that no one collects from.

Let me know if you would be willing to donate.

I used to get laid off every winter. It called un-enjoyment!
Worked under the table and double dipped. But then again not all my egg are in this basket. If you learn a skill nobody can take that from you and you'll always feed your family. You'll never be rich per say but you'll alway be comfortable.
