I've enjoying mentoring in both military and civilian roles, and figured I might be able to help mold those who will eventually be among our ranks.

For what it's worth, the 5 I'm currently mentoring have fairly extensive aviation backgrounds and seem to be very sharp. Having never flown with them I cannot attest to their stick and rudder, but I have encouraged all of them to explore fun flying outside of work such as glider, taildragger or aerobatic flying - there is no replacement for building that seat-of-the-pants kinesthetic sense short of basic military pilot training.

just curious- what’s your background, and how did you get involved with aviate? Are you a line guy when not doing the aviate stuff?

thanks

Background is a little of everything. Flight instruction, twin Cessnas flying canceled bank checks, regional flying Dash 8s, military flying A-10s, charter & corporate flying King Airs, Citations, 600 series Challengers. Relative new hire to UAL - October 2019. Started on the 73, now on the 756.

I'm just a regular line F/O. A buddy from my BI class sent me a link when they were looking for folks about 12-ish months ago. In my previous civilian job, I was a pilot supervisor for about 70 pilots, so I thought I could parlay that and my other previous experience to help with our own hiring and future pilot pool.

What kind of encouragement (or false promises) are you offering here? United is publicly saying all CAPEX is canceled, with the exception of a pilot school, and on the eve of massive pilot furloughs?

What’s the spin? Is it just a profit center of false hope?

oof
this did not age well

Out of curiosity, when you were interviewing to be part of the aviate team, was it all HR types you spoke with, or were any line pilots involved in your selection? (Like the real job interview?)

Honestly the 'interview process' was not so much an interview as it was filling out a few questionnaires and having a few recommendations from friends who have been on the property (one CAL, two UAL) for a while. When someone did make contact, it was a person (I guess you could call her HR) that was an administrator for the Aviate program and she went over my background, asked a few questions, answered a few questions I had, and then sent me emails to look over the Aviate materials.

I then was assigned 5 candidates and made contact with them, established a rapport, and started trying to figure out the Aviate program myself.
