Maybe his numbers were somehow thrown off by the absolute eternity of the all of 14 months he spent on furlough.

 

This deal just bought a little time before the company commits to a plan. This spring will determine our fate. If a vaccine and/or treatment is out and things are strongly trending back, the company will most likely continue with the TA and we will be in a better position to recover than we would be with thousands of pilots on furlough. If nothing has has changed by then, we will furlough to the level where we would have been without this deal and either pause, or keep going. The union said in one of the Q&A sessions that the company could be to 3,900 furloughs before next summer (I believe it was by March). If our numbers are not improving, we’ll most likely have 3,900+ on the street before the summer is over. The other possibility is that they elect to accept the limit of ~2,000 furloughs and continue with the agreement rather than furlough twice that many and deal with the amount of time it takes to recall and recover.

 

Question: If/when UAL does furlough, how much of a larger PWA change do you think you folks would take to not furlough?

Is it safe to say that there will never be another furlough at UAL?

 

I think the company was probably estimating needing around 2K furloughs come summer ‘21, which is why they allow themselves that number in the TA. Where they were anticipating 2K furloughs and the rest at full pay, we’ve locked in up to 2K furloughs & concessionary pay for the rest for up to a year plus. Of course, that’s all just based on predictions. Only time will tell who was right.

Disagree. Below was the latest forecast....every one of them would have been toast by Christmas, not by summer. With more in ‘21.

October 1: 1510 furloughs
October 30: 588 furloughs
November 30: 544 furloughs
Total: 2642

 

Sometimes true leadership is making an unpopular decision for the better good!!! This is something that has been lost today with the polarization of everything. Unfortunately, this whole thing became too much like our political rhetoric today, with the attitude of if you’re not with me, then you’re against me. This is a tragedy of our Society.

For all of you who voted yes to save our brethren from being released into a job market that is the worst since the Depression, thank you!!! For those who voted no, I sincerely appreciate and am thankful for your sacrifice!!! Especially since you didn’t want this to happen.

Right now is not the time to continue the divisive rhetoric, we need to rebuild bridges with our fellow pilots. We are all UNITED!!!

 

I think that they had come to the crossroads and were faced with a difficult decision using incomplete data. They were not going to burn massive amounts of cash to keep the airline fully staffed to be in a position for recovery. This deal lets them reduce the cash burn and kick the can down the road for a few months and hopefully make a more informed decision using more complete data. I don’t believe that they were just going to furlough 2,000 and be done. If they had started furloughs now, they would have committed to that plan and right sized the airline for demand, and 3,900 was the starting point. This will allow more people to elect to retire early and wait a few months to see what happens. If we do furlough deep next year, there will hopefully be 600+ pilots off of the top that will reduce involuntary furloughs for the junior, and put the rest of us closer to the top of the smaller United. Hindsight will be 20/20, and in a few years the correct decision will be obvious, until then it’s nothing more than a guess.
