The company has been paying through the nose to get these flights done. There’s a note in the lounge at the hotel in GUM joking that beer must be replaced at the ratio of premium pay each guy is receiving. My trip last week had everyone at 100% except my poor reserve butt only at 50%.
The ‘Rona has been very good to the widebody fleet. Thanks again to the dude who came up with the cargo operation.

SMH at the mentality of some of my brothers and sisters. I hate to say it, but ALPA has to save us from our own dumb thoughts and decisions sometimes. Sleeping on planes is unsat. Period. Full stop.

I’m not talking sleeping on a plane like a layover... I’m talking about something similar to our 4 crew long haul flights to India... but with a stopover to drop/load cargo to China and continue on to Japan or someplace not as locked down.

Isn't that what we are doing out of NRT and GUM to places like HKG, CTU, PEK and SIN? Long ass duty days to SIN, but it seems to be working.

That wouldn't fit in a duty day, HKG and BOM barely fit on a normal day.

Shanghai
Delta started flying nonstop from DTW and SEA to PVG in early December. Delta has decided to pulled all of the PVG trips from the schedule for January. Substandard layover accommodations, food, confined to room, long wait for the required COVID test at PVG. Wait times for testing after block in have reported to be longer than three hours in some cases. Block in to hotel room can be in excess of four to six hours. No idea what will happen if a crew member tests positive for COVID-19? No layovers going forward, but will continue to fly through ICN and do an out and back from Korea to Shanghai.

But seriously, this pollical tit for tat with people and the virus has got to stop. They are doing this intentionally so the Chinese airlines can fly to the US unfettered, while we pay the price, literally. When I queried ALPA, they said sit and wait for the election results. Things will change after that.....still waiting.

UAL was intransigent in their desire to have direct flights. Read, rather large profits with even half full flights. The mountain of reports and procedural BS at the airport finally put it over the top when people were worried about their safety. Never should have gotten this far.
As far as I know, the Chinese are still, "It's their way or the highway." I think the only way to really get their attention now is reciprocity. If our people can't be realistically, reasonably protected with, at the minimum, safe layover hotels then we will start restricting the Chinese airlines access to the US.
Which.....is back to politics.
