The guys I know who failed it were solid guys. The only constant seemed to be: don’t hesitate on your questions. The guy with kids - don't leave the computer and come back 5-10 minutes later. Nobody knows what goes into scoring. If you’re answering every question in 5 seconds and you get to one that asks if you like to get blackout drunk or sexually harass people at work and it takes you 5 minutes to decide, it might count against you even if you get the “right” answer. The computer doesn’t know you’re changing a diaper. It might think you have a hard time deciding what your answer is.

It is recommended to have a glass of wine or a beverage of your choice prior to doing the hogan. Relax and be yourself is suggested. The comments of word the question in context of ‘ In general at work’ is appropriate. So here’s your first test question. Do you like auto racing?

the answer is based on who YOU are and it doesn’t matter.

I like auto racing I’ve followed F1 racing since the 80’s but I don’t like to drive cars fast. You might see that question too. If you like auto racing and you also race cars then answer both yes. 1 more piece of hogan advice DO NOT ANSWER HOW YOU THINK THEY WANT YOU TO. Just be honest and be yourself.

True or false, “the company is out to get you”. The correct answer is false, even if you do believe the company is out to get you. So in that instance, DO ANSWER HOW YOU THINK THEY WANT YOU TO. “Do you get annoyed at work a lot?” Honest answer, true. Correct answer, false. This is a CFS test. To see if you have common ********* sense. People always get so worked up over the hogan. It is designed to filter out 10% of people at the far left and right of the bell curve. You don’t want to be the party animal or the recluse. Be somewhere in the middle. If you’re pretty normal, you will pass. I keep hearing people say, take a drink before hand. When the hogan asks you, true or false, “you drank a beer before taking this test” how will you answer? CFS.


PS, the timing thing is a myth. I took forever, then I exited the test, then went back in and changed some answers. Still passed the first time. I think they should ditch the hogan and bring back a sim ride.

Honestly, I am a recluse and answered totally honest about being introverted as hell. Still got past it. My friend who is a party animal, still got past it. You don't know who they want to hire, and your assumptions might be wrong.

Why? Honest question. I get ditching the hogan, but the sim ride was just another thing to separate people from their money as you pay for a "practice session."

The people who have been fired from training in recent years, to my understanding, were fired based on attitude and not flying problems. So I can see why HR would want something hogan like, as much as I don't like it.

With the notable exception of some of the CFI to United direct hires, I haven't heard of many new hires struggling with training in a way that a sim ride would have weeded them out.

I had the same problem this morning. On the RST-United page on Facebook, one guy was saying that Becoming United is really just a corporate profile that you're setting up for UAL. I emailed pilotrecruiting@united to confirm that Becoming United was really just submitting the online profile for the Pilot position and not viewing some kind of video or something like that.

This "in general" is good advice. There are plenty of resources that talk about what the hogan measures. The company is now offering both the "light side" and "dark side" of the tests. The HPI is a measure of your personality on a 7 measure scale and assesses what you are like as a person on your best day (at work) while highly self-policing your behavior. The questions are asked similarly but with different weighting - sometimes vs. always - answers would pull your trait the same direction but at different magnitudes. Words like NEVER and ALWAYS....mean exactly that....ALWAYS means ALWAYS WITHOUT EXCEPTION.

The "dark side" test is a bit different. It's supposed to determine how you come undone under stress. They started using this battery in 2019-2020 along with the "turn the camera on" stuff.

What is unknown is what personality profiles UAL considered acceptable. Here is a sample from the hogan company about pilots:

There is an entire youtube channel about Hogan assessments. There isn't any gouge about how to "pass" but it explains the tests and the traits that are measured.

Another thing to consider - the first output of the results is a "validity score". This determines if the score is valid and interpretable or if the tester seemed to randomly select answers.

This is probably the type of analysis report that UAL gets based on whatever traits they are looking to hire.

Something to consider - though there are 7 factors in this model - it might be possible that UAL is only looking at certain factors. For example - it may care less about ambition and school success but require targeted adjustment, sociability, prudence and likeability score. The sample report shows that of all the factors - the sample company was only looking specifically at 4 traits between the two tests. A test taker could seriously be sweating over a question that has no applicability to the trait UAL wants to assess.

Bottom line - it's nice to understand a bit more about the test and that knowledge may help you "pass" it by understanding that it's not some kind of trick. What constitutes an "acceptable profile" is a complete unknown ...

The best advice is to not take anybody’s advice. It’s also good advice to not GIVE any advice. I passed, and they never told me why. Friends of mine didn’t, and they were also never told why. It’s a personality profile test, and your bias is gonna to interfere with what you believe happened. It’s also entirely possible (likely) that the goal posts are relocated periodically.
