However, I’m sure he’ll have several offers and certainly shouldn’t wait for another shot in a year.

It is a guppy though. I saw a kid who could barely walk look out the terminal window at a 737. He looked at his mom, pointed at the 737, and said, "Fish! Fish!" She said, "No, that's an airplane. It looks like a fish though doesn't it." Now with those winglets it's taken on a lionfish or Beech 1900 look, all kinds of crap hanging off the edges. It's definitely one of the higher fractal dimension jets. It has evolved like a living organism and taken complex form. "Guppy" is appropriate.

Pretty much it's been called that at United for a long time. I fly Fifi. Doesn't bother me a bit when someone calls it that. Hell, the plane calls you a retard a minimum of twice every leg. If someone is truly bother by anothers nickname for their airliner they are letting the wrong s--t get under their skin. My opine of course.
And of course the LUAL guys know the LCAL guys are very sensitive to the name Guppy, which is part of why they do it (it's also part of the UAL corporate culture). And pointing out on a public forum that you are an LCAL guy and sensitive to it is NOT going to make it stop any sooner.

As a post merger hire, I can be completely honest when I tell you that the reason Continental guys never called it “the guppy” was because many of them did not have a career expectation to ever leave it… Whereas most United pilots believed it was a rite of passage that they would graduate beyond. I’m not trying to be a jerk… But that’s the way it is/was. Furthermore, new hires are literally taught not to call it a guppy if they don’t know the person, because of the amount sensitivity the Continental folks feel. So if someone is not calling in a guppy in front of you, that is saying more about you than them.
there are plenty of idiosyncrasies that the legacy united guys and gals have (constantly feeling slighted by ATC, believing UAL was still the airline they got hired at 10 years ago, circa 2009)… But the guppy thing is certainly a glaring CAL one for everyone outside of the Ex-Con bubble. I’m on the WBs now… So if a continental captain wants to take me to pro standards when I read back the taxi instructions and call it a guppy… I suppose we can sort it out there

As many have explained, it’s a term of endearment. But, a few of our more “sensitive” colleagues mistakenly think it’s a slam. Nothing could be further from the truth. It probably stems from a “who moved my cheese mentality” post merger. Some didn’t like the fact that United’s pilot culture was the one that was embraced, so they dug their heels in like children at everything that wasn’t how it was pre merger. It’s pretty silly when you read/hear it, but as time goes on, most people “get it” and find something else to stress about. I suspect that people like blockplus are just being obtuse. Plus, it’s the forums- an easy way to anonymously unload your frustration at a complete stranger.
