This former CAL guy fully embraced the new culture. I really don’t care about nicknames for airplanes or what we call various things, but everything is better now than it was before.

The training is night and day better
The compensation is better
The work rules and contract as a whole is better
Union support is better
The culture in the chief pilots office is better
Crew scheduling is much better about contract compliance, especially when things go south
The union leadership is no longer full of scabs
The training department isn’t mostly scabs
Better overall contract compliance
The half wing concept is unique to United and I think it’s a positive thing

It’s just a much better job. There are things about this place that I definitely don’t like, but this is so much better than what many of us have been through.

This….And on the flip side of the coin, Cal ran a better business and gave the passengers a better product than UAL did. So overall, I think we blended the best of both (legacy Ual pilot culture and legacy cal corporate model). Of course nothing is absolute, and there is lots of room for improvement, but it’s a good marriage overall, IMO.

Union/training wasn't "full" of scabs when I was hired, might be a bit of a dated characterization, but you probably have been here longer than me. I am glad the few remaining in positions are gone. I think both sides benefited from better compensation. I do agree compliance is much better.

My understanding is that the name 'guppy' came from the Boeing CEO. The story goes:
There was a 747 (whale) on the ramp next to a 737.
The Boeing CEO said that the 737 looked like a guppy next to the whale.

FWIW.
I have never verified whether or not it's true.

I heard a similar story but it was at SFO, an exchange between a controller and a 747 taxiing. They were told to follow the 737, and they said something to the affect that it was so cute! Will it grow like a guppy if you feed it? The name seemed to stick.

Thanks for informing me. I wasn't aware of that when I hired on 35 years ago.

And of course the LUAL guys know the LCAL guys are very sensitive to the name Guppy, which is part of why they do it (it's also part of the UAL corporate culture). And pointing out on a public forum that you are an LCAL guy and sensitive to it is NOT going to make it stop any sooner.
No Being ever called me a retard.
