I’m saying once you get close to 50 your odds of getting to a major goes way down. There are some that get hired, but the percentage of fifty year old interviewees that get hired is way less than forty year olds.

You’re not gonna bait me into speculating way.

The desirable potential pool is lower than the total number of certificates.

Those are just arbitrary requirements that employers put on candidates. If there was a shortage of pilots, they would lower or get rid of them before cancelling hundreds of flights, losing millions in revenue and profit. Until they can put qualifications other than ATP and experience, then I don’t think it constitutes a pilot shortage.

And keep in mind that just at the regionals, we are talking about probably almost 20,000 pilots.

Those regional pilots don’t fill the total demand for flying to be done. If those pilots at the regionals aren’t replaced at the same rate the majors hire them, then the flying has to move to the majors as well, leaving the ratios the same.

The majors either need to move the flying to ml or find quick replacements at the regionals. Feed is too important.

Its a non-trivial exercise. You need an aircraft large enough to have an astrodome and stable enough to take star/sun shots with a sextant. Think DC-3 at a minimum.

Then you need to coordinate that with one of the few DPEs remaining and get them together with the airplane and a crew.

Last guy I knew who did it finagled a ride in a C-130, and that was 1990 or so.

well they do when it comes to assigning seniority to new hire classes just in reverse.

no one thinks it’s a big deal until the music stops

United PIlot Recruitment goes through great lengths to withhold the applicant's age from anyone involved in the hiring and interview process. They have you redact any reference to your age or birthdate from the documents you submit to them. New hires in their 50s are common. A few over 60 have been hired.

atp date, college graduation date, dates of previous employment, all can give an approximate age.

as I said, the percentages go down as age goes up.
