Default 133 Unfilled Captain Bids and other stats

Here’s the summary of the vacancy bid.
1,241 total bids not filled
133 unfilled CAPTAIN bids in LAX, SFO, DCA, EWR.
170 unfilled 777/787 FO in SFO, DCA, EWR
2 year Captains in DEN (used to be 2 years just to get FO in Denver)

Another bid supposed to be out in January or February.
New hires to likely be awarded 787/777 FO in new hire training.
Everyone with 500 hours on property and off probation can hold Captain.
In 2023 alone we take on 157 new airplanes, the same number that Spirit Airlines has.
None of this counts 787 deliveries not announced because of the delivery pause at Boeing.

Any ideas how we get out of this pilot shortage? I can’t imagine this doesn’t affect other airlines significantly in the next couple years as we hire their pilots.

Just buy Spirit then the NB fleet is staffed.

I’m kidding…

I've tried to start the rumor for years that we are going to buy Alaska.....nothing so far, but there's still a chance....

I'll take it, just for the DEN base

They could try buying a regional like SkyWest with around 6,000 pilots and 200+ 175’s, which would bring all 175 and CRJ (what’s left of them) flying in house, but that would require a massive set of balls.

Easier to just hire their pilots and not deal with an SLI.

And a massive amount of money, both in acquisition and ongoing costs integrating all those pilots on their current longevity on mainline pay scales. Acquisition costs of a $1.8bn company (plus the acquisition premium), plus their debt, plus the fees owed to terminate the DCI/AE/AS contracts…I just don’t see how that would be financially viable, even if Kirby had the biggest stones on earth.

"Everyone with 500 hours on property and off probation can hold Captain." - well, that's should be a pretty good recruitment tool, right?

Yes, age 67! Not as many should cry this time since we can all hold the left seat.

Can someone enlighten me on why 777/787 may be desirable/undesirable for a new hire. Are these slots going unfilled because people are jumping fleet types to upgrade to captain or is life as an FO on 777/787 not so great?
