New Hires to be offered Widebody FO

Eventually as we run out of regional and military pilots to harvest we are going to have to start following a “cadet” pilot program modeled after what many foreign carriers use. And these “cadet” pilots will need to be bid restricted to the right seat for a period of time gaining a requisite amount of experience before being allowed to bid to the left seat.
The training and bidding system we have in place now is not set up to deal with inexperienced pilots.

That is why regulations require 1000 121 time for upgrade. Now we can debate all we want on if that is enough, but there are requirements in place.

To flesh out this scenario:
24 yo regional FO gets hired at 1500tt and 500 121 sic
His buddy from riddle has just upgraded (25, 2000tt)
dumb and dumber are now running a 737 into EWR
It’s an edge case but not implausible. Certainly more likely than some of the risks deemed large enough to mitigate in 121 ops

I found being a captain United far easier than a captain at the regionals. The Planes are more automated, better maintained, and there are so many more departments constantly aiding in your decision making. Not to mention, as long as you have good judgement and a backbone, when you raise an objection to something, within a couple minutes you’ll probably be talking to TomC, an FODM, a dispatch supervisor etc. At the regionals, scheduling/dispatch would just say “if you’re going to refuse it, we might be able to find you a hotel in a couple hours and you can discuss this with your chief pilot tomorrow.”
This is not to say I didn’t fly with some first officers with questionable judgment… But most of them are in the industry for 20 years and didn’t know (or care to know) what they didn’t know.

You could get around this easily by having green on green rules, but coming from a regional where this exact thing happened all the time and it was just fine, I'm not that worried. I did OE for plenty of first time 24-25 year old captains and they did a great job overall. I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way...
