While it's terrfic to see all the new hires coming in at record numbers, it all poses a bit of an issue when it comes contract talks. Many of our new folks are coming from regionals where the pay wasn't the best and qol was marginal at best. Now they get to united in a short amount of time compared to years past and are all starry eyed and excited, which is great.
However they might not feel the need for getting the best (highest) pay that we deserve. Getting to UAL for many people is "good enough" when it comes to career prospects and may not realize what us pilots can miss out on.

i love all the garbage takes on new folks being the weak link. yep. bunch of starry eyed “Shinny Jet” peeps… no way some weathered UAL veteran could be the one eyeing his/her sweet little carve out in a contract extension

I’m one of those starry-eyed new folks just happy to be here. The quick upgrades are largely due to horrendous reserve rules, which I would like to see brought up to industry standard even if it means upgrade times go up. Don’t worry, just keep the mentoring coming. I listen closely to the CA’s I fly with and often take notes. I doubt I’m the only one. Let’s get some serious improvements in this contract. Cheers! 🍻

Many of us come from ULCC where money was already really good and in some cases qol wasn't too bad. I'm happy to be here and I'm ready to make our contract better. We deserve it as professionals

This post warmed my heart. If all newbies had your attitude, we’d have all the leverage we need. Thanks for paying attention. As mentioned earlier, the company hopes you are so enamored with just being here, that you ignore the fact that they are spending money like sailors on shore leave on everything EXCEPT our cba. Welcome to the party!
I think our contract is good in many ways but obviously always room for improvements. I think most of us know where those improvements should be. Pay rate increases are obviously long overdue. JetA and 100L are getting a bit expensive for my tastes right now.
but hey at least we feel appreciated for all the "hard work" we've done thru covid.

I remember when Dubo said C2K was a money contract; the next one would be work rules.
No matter which subset within our group (senior/middle/junior), more than half will base their vote on section 3. Always.
I'm not counting on many work rule changes in the next TA. Same as the last 25 years.

Collectively, pilot groups need to do a better job of saying no the first offer and accept shorter term pain for the long term outlook.
