I just posted this elsewhere, but I thought it might be beneficial to draw attention to this item with a stand alone thread.
Most senior guys don’t care about reserve, and most believe reserve is a choice. Most don’t pay attention to reserve because the chance of them sitting reserve is so remote, it’s not even worth the effort.
Seniority means you’re able to get those premium pay trips, and plenty of pilots make $$$ waiting for these summer premium pay trips to open up.
With this new TA, there will be fewer and fewer opportunities, which means less $$$ in your pocket.
Example:
A 4 day trip worth 20 hours departing at 0600 opens up the afternoon/evening before.
No one wants it. The company can’t assign it to any first day reserves, because they’re currently protected from duty until 1000.
Usually, it goes to premium, let’s say 150% before someone grabs it, so now the 20 hours is worth 30 hours. Senior guys snap it up before you can blink twice.
Pretty straight forward. With this TA, a lot of that goes away.
Why?
Currently, first day reserves cannot be assigned a trip/SC/FSB before 1000. If the TA passes, the company can now assign a 0600 SC for 1 hour of add pay, and for 2 hours of add pay they can assign a reserve a 0600 FSB, not to mention that 0600 four day trip that WOULD HAVE paid you 30 hours.
With this TA, the company crams it down a reserve’s throat for 2 hours. The company saves 8 hours at worst, 30 hours at best.
EVERYONE loses with this deal.

To those who think their ad pay benefits will be wonderful, I ask will you be on reserve forever?

I thought the ability of scheduling to assign an early trip on day 1 of a reserve block was limited to reserve blocks of less than 4 days, right? I’m not a reserve expert but maybe 1 block a month on most fleets will be a block of days less than 4, correct? Just asking

This provision likely means pilots would actually spend less time on reserve. The second order effect of having some less premium pay opportunities for senior pilots is that senior pilots won’t pick up as many trips. Less trips covered per pilot means more pilots holding lines, less time on reserve for everyone, and while on reserve you can take advantage of this add pay.
