You'll get better seniority progression in SFO rather than lax. SFO has all fleets, LAX does not have the 777. If you can do $3k/month for a single bedroom apartment in the nice areas of the east bay, it's about a 40 min drive to the airport. Walnut creek, danville, san ramon, dublin/pleasanton. West side of the bay check out Burlingame, certain parts of San Mateo, Foster City. If you live closer to SJC you can pick up trips out of there.

I thought that simulator instructor could be a part-time, an even mix with flying, that's how is done at my current airline.

Great information since I have no clue about neighborhoods or areas. I just visited once, for a 5 day mini-vacation and fall in love with the entire area.
I guess the effort with rent is worthed if you reside where you want. I'll be burning ZILLOW today checking your recommendations.

I'm a Bay Area native. I haven't lived there in a few decades but all of my family is still there. The good news is, prices have been static or declining lately in the Bay Area for a number of reasons, including a lot of tech workers leaving for states with a lower cost of living where they can work from home... For renting, there are a lot of new apartment buildings in Dublin in particular, especially near I-580. If you have a family and a working spouse and can afford to rent (or buy) a house, Pleasanton is probably the nicest city in the East Bay, followed by Danville and Walnut Creek. Livermore is also nice and slightly less expensive. If you have a large enough budget and want cooler weather in the summer, most of the North Bay is nice. Petaluma is a really cool city, and Sebastopol and the Russian River area is a little slice of heaven if you want a quieter outdoorsy small town experience, about 1 hour north of downtown SF and about 90 minutes from SFO. Obviously, Napa up to Calistoga is beautiful, but that's pretty much unobtainium unless you're a millionaire. The good news is, you're only about 45 minutes drive to the best vineyards in Napa from somewhere like Walnut Creek.

I was there off 580 in Dublin a few weeks ago visiting a high school friend and he took me to this local tap n' pour pub start up called 'Thirsty Bay' that shares space with one of the newer apartment buildings there. I'm sure they're probably nice inside, I just don't like the cookie cutter back to back houses with no yards. All of this used to be wide open space and it's been sad watching every inch of green space get developed over the years. This is pretty much what you're limited to buying unless you have a spare 2.5-3m laying around.
