when I used to fly PEK the trips from IAD (EWR) were 4 days… NRT were 3 days… NRT went senior and PEK went junior for multiple reasons.

I flew PEK for years as a 3 day. Worked 9 days a month. Loved it until 117 came along.

Why would the 117 regs have any effect on the length of that trip?

The duty window for non-acclimated crews is much smaller than if they are acclimated. The company added a day for the cost of per diem to use the bigger window.

the same reason why we augment flights to the UK that are less than 8 hours each way.

the company can’t add a pilot to a four man crew so they have to add a day.
