New WB Captain bids

Plus we have ~88 new hire 737 CAs who elected not to keep their CA award, so that should create some movement as well... Even though they aren't shown on the vacancy report. If I'm reading that memo correctly...

I believe you are. However they may not show until the actual vacancy award…..so make sure you bid what you want as you may not show on snapshots.

You'd only see secondary vacancies on a snapshot in a NBFO category if it drops below the min. Anything between min and max usually doesn't show up until the final if manpower planning elects to backfill above the min. So say CLE737FO has a min max of 50/60 and is staffed to 60 (I'm making numbers up because I'm too lazy to go look at what they actually are but the point remains). 11 FO's bid out on a snapshot so you'd see 1 unfilled vacancy to get to the min of 50. If 5 bid out on a snapshot you probably won't see any vacancies. Final award is up to whatever manpower planning decides as long as it falls between the 50/60 min/max.
The UPA 8C4a reference secondary vacancies have to do with training capacity. So if a current IAH777CA bids to SFO, they don't require training. Instead of a slot going unused they could award an additional vacancy over what's published to get someone into a training slot.

this explanation should be a sticky…..

The large number of WB aircraft that we have is a definite plus for everyone and one of the nice things about working here. For those who desire WB flying, there is plenty of opportunity. For those of us who don't, there are lots of senior pilots bidding off of the NB and giving us more reletive seniority in our respective seats.

I think I read somewhere (hearsay, of course) that one widebody CA vacancy creates 13 additional vacancies across the system. It will be very interesting to see this play out in terms of the additional vacancies created.

I agree. This will be a valuable vacancy compared to the previous NBCA-heavy vacancies that were primarily filled by post-covid hires, thus not creating much movement further up on the seniority list.

that was the case along time ago when we had more fleets and the 747 was in its own pay scale. It’s probably closer to 5-6 now

Of course, I could also be totally wrong.

Yup, just popped my bid in...if I'm unusually lucky, maybe I can avoid commuting to IAH reserve all summer long. Fingers crossed!
