Not at UAL but at AA and made this jump a few years ago. I have three little kids and more than 25 years left. I've got plenty of time to make more money. I didn't want to be a transient father and wanted to be present as much as possible. You can't buy back more time and to me these years where my kids are young are priceless and the most time they will ever want to spend with me.

Am I reading the contract correctly in that, hypothetically, if I was awarded 737 in new hire training but a vacancy opened for 756 4 months later for example, I could switch and bypass the seat lock since it's a higher category?

Yes you can always move up in a pay band without incurring a lock

and then if a 777/787 vacancy opens up 4 months later you can bid over and bypass your 756 training freeze.
